What's Happening in YOUR Randomly-generated Apocalypse?
I finally have what I would call my first ‘successful’ character. And it’s one I randomly generated.
Last firefighter scenario, average stats, flimsy/glass jaw/night vision.
I had severely underestimated how much damage a chick with a few ranks in melee weapons can do.

I had always made characters with no combat skills focused on crafting, but it’s clear now that was a mistake. It’s much easier to put your base skill points into combat skills and survive long enough to find skill books/practice the skills in-game.

Also, starting in the middle of town in a building as secure as the fire station made early game night-looting super easy.
In general, I would consider putting any points into skills on chargen to be a huge waste. Since a point is worth either 1 skill or 1 stat, stats are the clear way to go. Skills can always easily be raised through reading/repetition, and surviving the early game is difficult but eminently doable.

Decided upon a summer and base location. Its in the woods along the only proper road between the south and the cluster of the north.

The major city is to the northwest about 3 hours car travel. Theres a second south of that and a third south west of that. They do a good job impeding travel west, but I havent given it an earnest effort since I found a lab map that revealed a lot of that. To the north of that largest city is a mall and then the swamp-fungal location I wanted to originally settle.

To the east of that is the bunker I had nuked. Thats all seperated from the cities south by a river, and I have no clue whats all up there.

To the east* and north of my spot is a few suburbs and small towns, and then a larger town hugging a second river. South* of me is a vast forest that I can just see the end of due to another lab map.

So megopolises to the west, swamp to the north, a neat river to the east, and forest to the south. South of my settlement, in the forest are 4 dangers. 2 fungal structures, the bloom and the tower, loom closest, with 2 triffid groves off to the east. East of that is an ant hill and then a prison that is guarded by an outpost and those two are the only occupants of a long stretch of north-south road that cross just outside my vision over the river.

When I left this off I was infected by shrooms. I spent a sleepless night searching for pharmacies, and none of them had antifungal drugs. I tore into the heart of the 2nd largest city, wielding a shoulder-strapped shotgun and holstering 2 short shotguns, as well as a back holstered automatic gun. I carried a spear and a reserve baton, 2 grenades, 2 pipe bombs, 4 manhacks, and even a few teargas grenades and cocktails. Strapped as I was, The horde certainly did not dissapoint, although it took some time for them to ‘spot me’ and the poop to smear.

I had navigated through the dark city pretty well, and with the help of a scorched earth policy I worked through 4 pharmacies. 2 were completely lootedand empty, and 2 had meager junk. Worse still, the third 1 I went to had this suprise.

They were just having the usual zombie orgies that zombie in ascii video games seem to. Molativ and move on.

I got away from that horde, but back at the Thunderhorse I ran into 2 shocker brutes and a hulk and some aux zoms. We had fun, I lost half my arm, but I got away with half the hood of the Thunderhorse missing and a bit of ammo gone.

Finally, as the sun came up and I started vomiting sporelings I stopped at a grocery store thinking they sometimes had liquid fungicide. Across the street was a hardware store with an outside gardening center, and guess what they had when I used the Viewer? So I imagine my charact grabbing a bottle of water and tearing into the bag, shoveling spoonfuls of powder into his mouth and gargling it around with the water. Gross. -_-

That done, I looked for a last ditch location to set up in. A hotel and mansion had spawn into each other, and the hotel pool won. While there I got ripped into shreds by shriekers and regular zoms, eating up the last of my arm health. Time for a splint, which, btw, Im suprised is still used on both arms/legs instead of following the tradition of watches and holsters and being on one side. Also I think they had their armoring nerfed :igmeou:

So this location I choose. A stretch of road between the two city-worlds and south of a gas station:

The 2 sidebyside @s are my base and myself respectivly. Well, the tent I propped up and myself in the Thunderhorse. just returned from collecting my food for the winter. I spent 1 day on that. I went to an ant hill and got eggs. 159 of them. I think ants got nerfed, but who knows, maybe theyre just the same and Im comparing them to zoms. Theyre def less aggressive.

Anywho, those greyed out Ts are a fungal bloom to the left and a tower to the right. I nuked the bloom because I wasnt messing with it with a broken arm. annoying creatures.

The tower was much simpler. I literally torched its home and then walked up to the walls with a spear. Spears are more than capable of making it pretty trivial to kill it if you can hit it.

Anywho, I was trying to decide between concrete and pallisade, one being the ideal and one being much easier to do. So I rammed a palisade wall with my Thunderhorse. And then I went to a concrete cathedral and rammed into that. The car came out much better than I expected from that, only missing one wheel and a frame. Im sure the spikes helped as they do. And the ramming puntcured the church, so we’ll see.

Im already halfway though summer, having spent all my time unloading, crafting, and disassembling. oh wells.

Turns out that maximum safe speed means maximum safe for the engine, not for me. Time to hoof it with all these books. Thank you past me for making that duffle bag, even if I can’t fight for shite with it on. Actually, I killed a moose wearing that thing, so maybe it’s not that bad.

dropping the bag will let you fight without it on, and is a near instant action. You can always pick it back up after.

I could drop it, but I can still fight pretty well with it. And then I don’t have to drop all of my precious books. Anyway, I cleared an office tower but I’m not sure about using it as a temporary base. The infinite bright light in the elevator seems like it could be usefull. Avtually, does that elevator work? I don’t have exp z-levels on, but having a second-floor base seems pretty cool.

I was making my first big scavenging run with a new side character.
I was already driving a decked out RV studded with solar panels and funnels and filled to the gills with loot. I was hoping to find an APC or Humvee to use as the base for an upgrade before heading back to my old base to prepare for a move to my new base, a partly hollowed out hospital (long story) that I’m turning into a fortress with a farmable central courtyard, just outside a huge city.

And then I found it.

The holy grail of vehicle building.

In the middle of a small town, a treadless but salvagable light tank immediately next to a near pristine infantry fighting vehicle, down the street from several solar vehicles, a fire truck, a pair of flatbed trucks, and several wrecks.

Within a few tiles of this I have a pool, a hardware store, an electronics store, a library, a garage, a school, and several houses I haven’t even begun to loot.

The police barricade down the street thinned out most of the local undead, and an m60 turret, my nagitana, and setting fire to an abandoned house took care of the rest.

This is the most glorious thing that I have experienced in-game since finding a hazardous waste sarcophagus full of crafting components and barrels with my main char.

Well since I’m on a trip over most of the weekend, my time for cata is basically zero since I only have my phone with me.

However when I get back I’ll do some quests for the refugee center.

Day 58. I found an armored car sitting about and looted the spiked plating off of it. Also got lucky and found an APC with a Mark 19 GL. It’s mine now, and I’m itching to put it to use. Crafted a turret frame and transformed my mounted M2 into an automated turret. Sadly, the GL seems to be another manual-only turret, but I’m absolutely okay with that. Now rolling around in just shy of five and a half tons of overkill. If I really wanted to be mean, I could always add a flamethrower turret. Or a shredder. Except for the howitzer (again, 155mm!), I’m pretty much geared toward taking on soft targets. Would be great if the 40mm grenades came in EMP and scrambler varieties. I do have a few RC cars with a controller, at least. Do EMPs and scramblers accept radio activation mods?

Big harvest at the moment. Can’t use the reaper as some plants are still growing and running over them will destroy the crop.

Either way, all the crops that will rot are stored in the ice lab, in a fridge that I dragged from a goo pit room. It holds 7k volume, but at this point it will be full before the end of autumn. It would probably be more easier to grab certain ingredients if I set a table or a counter, one for each type of crop, instead of stuffing them all on one container.

Hmm, I have trained two more NPCs in cooking, but it seems that the decrease in crafting time didn’t change much.

Using sugar crafter from sugar beets to compare… it takes 30 hours to craft a batch of 20 of them alone. Having one NPC cut down the time to around 24 hours and 20 minutes, and two NPCs made it 24 hours and 5 minutes. Not a big change with having more NPCs, but oh well. I’ll increase their skills further with chem crafting. Maybe higher levels will decrease the crafting time more.

Also, current diet of my survivor is homebrew beer and irish coffee, with random picks from the cannibal cuisine.

I did a booboo. And survived with perhaps the least health I have ever.

I went out looking for a solar car for its sweet engine block. I went out at lik 1500. I spent ingame hours searching streets for one, and the few I did find were intercity and zombies too much.

Night falls, dark as balls. Probs because it was balls before I found a semi-suitable candidate. A solar car with maybe 30 reglar zoms hanging out nearby, fml firstly I forgot how strong zoms were, and its magnifying effects in groups. But I had brought molativs with me. I usually carry one on my person no matter what, as an emergency. So I threw the 2 I had on me, and they attracted all manner of badies. Fighting through children and some tough zoms, my characters legs had taken a beating when an acid zom puked on me when I was grabbed. Took me 2 turns to realize I couldnt move ffs.

So all that, I whip out everyhting I was carrying. Which was atp a shotgun, a short shotgun, a matchbomb, and 2 manhacks. Killing the immedieate zoms, a shocker brute comes out of the darkness and threatens to cut me off. Bumping cocaine, I manage to just get inside the SB’s circle and he smashes me into the car. Thanks arsehole. Opening the door, it takes me so long to climb into the doorway hes already on me again. My pain close to 90, I crawl to the drivers seat, around the minifridge. The shocker kicks me into the cargo space with a roar and closes the admittedly small gap. With him raining blows on me I crawl to the drivers seat and, securely fastened, I drive off. I suvived with a forewardslash head and colon health for the rest. all my limbs were blasted away, and my torso couldn’t have been far behind.

Anywho what a magnificant death it would have been, but it makes only a mediocre, if somewhat tongue-in-cheek story to tell if you live through it.

Though the fact you’re driving away with no arms or legs makes the story better.

I stumbled across a pot-grower’s basement. Proceeded to grab all of the MJ, and then was chuckling to myself as I went in a big circle around the room. The previous owner had randomly distributed conveniently rolled joints throughout the room in a big circular pattern. Initially, I was thinking, “Haha, silly pothead, how random is this”. Then, after I finished collecting, it suddenly occurred to me: this guy/gal was a genius. They set it up so that no matter where they tried to look while they were baked out of their mind, they’d end up finding another joint.

Moderation, good sir. Moderation in all things.

Well, seems like stuffing all the crops in a fridge wasn’t a good idea. It can hold 7k volume, but I forgot that it can only hold 4k-something items total.

So basically I just decided to build counters for all of them instead, one counter for each type of crop. Taking stock of them all, so I can figure out which crop I should grow more of.

-192 rhubarbs
-317 onions
-243 cucumbers
-246 carrots
-196 broccoli
-1,451 tomatoes
-489 potatoes
-224 sugar beets
-221 corn
-18 lettuces
-63 cranberries
-246 cabbages
-274 blackberries
-311 raspberries
-172 strawberries
-1,085 blueberries
-277 wild vegetables
-5 zucchinis

This doesn’t include crops that don’t rot, fruits and plants that can be scavenged but not farmed, and generally some of the items have more of them, but they were used up already via crafting, notably strawberries, sugar beets and blackberries.

Summer is halfway done, and so is the time to farm. Doubling the current amount of crops is possible.

Space for every kind of crop.

You need to learn the value of clutter. o3o

NEVER.

Clutter for the clutter god. ;w;

Though the fact you’re driving away with no arms or legs makes the story better.
What if I said he has the remote control cbm, and if I could have gotten away with drving from the cargo hold I would have?

Hm, totally thought that said “cops” and not “crops” at first.
