Hey y’all original Jarlaxle here if anyone cares but couldn’t get signed back into my old profile and it never sent me a password reset email so whatevs.
Anywho, after getting hooked on doing the ambush start for a while and getting murdered on average 15 days into the game I decided to switch back to regular ole’ day one survivor in the shelter. I must say it is a lot easier to get a foothold this way.
Spring day 63 of 91 day seasons, first year finds me with SWAT armor, guns out the wazoo (even found the SAKO! which is a mod easter egg), survivor machete etc. Humvee in like new status piled high with food, ammo and books. Any skill worth having is 6+.
Took forever to make it out starting town though. It was surrounded on all sides by water, hazardous waste site, dead end roads leading to labs etc. Ended up hacking through a forest, finding a truck and driving for almost three in game days. Craziest road journey ever. Finally located current mega city that I’m clearing of the evil undead scourge.
Holy shit.
I was walking through a swamp, forced to abandon my farm temporarily in search of clean water, or matches (to start a fire.) I only had ten rounds in my handgun. Managed to cross a bridge in the rain with a solar car whose engine died on the other side of the bridge.
One of the main things you should focus on is getting a reliable sort of armor that’s not very encumbering but has a good defense. (my personal favorite is (boiled) leather armor with survivor duster, survivor cargo pants and steel toe boots mixed in with regular clothing like boxer shorts and tshirts)
The next is getting a reliable way to easily kill zeds, I’d recommend archery for newbs, especially crossbows because they’re like a gun so attachments galore and they’re silent. They need strength and perception to use however. If you don’t like crossbows then the reflex recurve bow is the best bow you can currently get.
Melee is a different story, while in the beginning without books it’s quite dangerous, but once you get decent armor and good skills with weapons, you can slaughter pretty much anything. Knife spears for newbies, press F for that extra reach so they can’t hit you. The absolute best melee setup you can get in my opinion is a katana with it’s corresponding martial art (The book of five rings) and 5+ melee and cutting weapons skill.[/quote]
Why duster in stead of trenchcoat? Seriously, as best I can tell, the trenchcoat is exactly the same as the duster except that it doesn’t encumber the legs. Also, I REALLY like to add the kevlar vest to that setup. It’s very nice.
I actually prefer the (diamond) wakizashi, actually - slightly faster, doesn’t gib quite as often, still kills quite reliably (gibbing the specials that I want to butcher for CBMs is BAD). But the katana is very nice, too. Actually, if you don’t have the CBM to be electricity proof and have shockers to do deal with or you are dealing with a lot of technicians, the wooden sword thingy (name escapes me at the moment) is pretty darn good, too.

While the Duster encumbers the legs, it protects the legs also - at least thats my reason for wearing that… well that and style
Afternoon, day 11: Picked up another NPC. He wants a flag, because 'MURICA! Another set of hands to kill things is nice, though, so I’m letting him tag along. I have also given up any hope of sanity, and am collecting bras to be thrown out of the window at zombies whilst I drive the car along.

And the duster is one of like three things that go into the legs outer layer, so it ought to be cherished.

Style and protection points. I’ve currently started wearing o-yoroi and it’s corresponding helmet with traditional and non traditional clothing mixed in just to mess around. My katana is my side arm. The wooden sword is called a bokken, and I’ve been using naginata’s as my main weapon and to a lesser extent I’ve been using kukri’s and combat knives when I want to change things up. Don’t need bulletproof vests b/c I believe my current body armor is enough. Gotta wear headgear however, I either a full tactical helmet or a regular one with a survivor mask.
I just stumbled onto a house in the dark. When I looked out the back windows, I saw a Z, so I started noping out of there. As I closed the house door, the day dawned - I’d overlooked the time! I quickly made my way in the “out” direction. And then I suddenly realized that I somehow had much more map revealed than before - probably the combination of dawn + binocs + being those 2 map tiles to the north of the prospective base. Anyhow, not making the base in that basement anytime soon. Too many Zs still crawling about.
Back to the farm it is.
EDIT: Smashed the lone Z lounging about near the bridge with some rocks and my new spear. Currently on my way to farm.
Two in-game days later, a fucking moose is just outside my farm door. I have some hope he’ll fall into my (fire)pit. I sorta expected it as he’s been wandering close for the two days, so I made another wooden spear and a javelin. Aaargh. I hate moose.
My latest character found a curious structure in the woods and decided to establish a base there.
It’s one tile away from the road, and secluded.
It is quite odd, though.
It has stained-glass windows, but no religious imagery on the inside, and a kitchen and beds. There’s a locked door, but I should be able to pick it with the locksmith kit I found in town today.
If you value your character’s continued existence I’d recommend you don’t unlock that door or go down the set of stairs into the basement it’s likely concealing.
Remember, your in a seemingly abandoned cabin in the middle of the woods, think back to every horror movie you’ve ever watched…

Go ahead, just be prepared for what you might find under the basement.
There should’ve been a 90% chance of a holy symbol spawning near the locked door. >w>
