So, a new game after 2-3 months. Yesterday’s experimental.
Static+wander spawns, static+wander NPC’s, item & monster & NPC spawn rates around 0.5-0.6.
Starting up at heli crash scenario (too OP imo).
It starts interesting: I spawn in between two large towns, surrounded by zeds and hordes.
Found a car, drove north to the local refugee center, thinking that there’s room to hide and people to help me fight.
Results: After killing maybe 100-200 zeds (and i helped quite a bit - the starting weapon is very good and has enough ammo, also pulped countless corpses), the horde still stands strong, while many refugees are dead. Me, being half dead, very hungry and very thirsty i had to flee. Good thing that the night fell, so i managed to slip further North. Also i found a fire axe at the Refugee Center carnage. This ups my survival chances. Even if slow-ish, this is a strong weapon.
Found a house with a garage to use as a base, and lucked out to find a wheelbarrow early. Now looting around at night, slowly whittling away at lone zeds until it will be safe to move during the day. I’ve managed to kill a zed master, but there is still a Hulk around somewhere, and big clusters of zeds at certain spots, making exploration risky. No tank bots or chicken walkers yet.
I still hope to clear the refugee center and rescue the unlucky survivors over there, but there’s lots of zeds around. I do hear gunshots when i come close though, so some might actually survive. I think we fought all the of initial horde in there, and what was left despawned inside the building. Maybe i will use explosive force against them to press the point.
Morning of Day 2 (hordes are turned on with zombie spawn rate at 2.5)
Started with absolutely no skills in order to get decent stats.
Good things include: I’ve got a katana, a MBR vest, a backpack, some tools and some cooked meat.
Bad things: I fought a NPC to get the katana and paid with both my arms (so I actually can’t use the weapon…), I’m craving both opiates and alcohol (I don’t have anything else to drink and pain was really becoming a problem). Also: it’s snowing.
I’m now wondering how the hell I can raise my first aid skill to maybe get my arms back…
EDIT: Gordon York died from a “surprise” grenadier zombie who forced me to play hide and seek in the woods.
After I spawned in the shelter I heard noises coming from the basement. “Hmm,” I thought, “maybe there are zombies in this shelter. THEY MUST DIE”. After showing the nearby locker my 12 STRENGHT fists, it fell apart in amazement and blessed me with my first weapon: my fists a pipe! Two to three turns later, I found myself at the staircase.
Clenching the pipe with my 12 STRENGHT hands, I slowly descended into the dephts below. The sudden heat forced me to stop half way! “Strange heat in the basement? Was there a fire here recently?” I murmured, “No matter! I’ll punch the fire away with my 12 STRENGHT fists!”.
With a heart of a lion, I rushed down the stairs to meet my destiny!
…
Then I felt into the rift and burned in lava.
Hnnng. All I need is a higher level mechanics book and an acetylene torch, and I can make this minitank awesomer.
EDIT: Oh. OH. Doh! Biodiesel book is mechanics, not cooking? This is good.
EDIT 2: Got her mostly fixed up, but I think I can add a few improvements. I stripped down most of a security van for its heavy duty parts, and loaded it all into an ice cream truck. Dingding.
EDIT 3: Adding frames to shield the rear corner cameras has resulted in a more phallic shape than I was intending. Will want to make it a full, all-encompassing layer anyway.
EDIT 4: NO. No. Bad zombies. Stop hammering my tank while I’m repairing it.
I never find these unique vehicles I see mentioned. I have Cars, 2x Trucks, 2x Vans, Big Rigs and military trucks, Humvees, and one type of APC. Is it a mod? I’m running O.C stable. I know the tanks are in the tanks mod
I’m a new player (a few weeks now and loving this game) and in my 2nd “real” game now (did one run with .4 zombies to learn the ropes a bit that lasted 30 days before I “upgraded”). I consider it a “real” run if I last more than a few days, and I’ve had many attempts that ended in early fatality.
I’m over a year in (spring of 2nd year) and have spent the past 20 or so game days (and many RL hours) working on a vehicle. There have been many functional vehicles around that I’ve driven back to base, so the outside of my base is like a car lot / junk yard. I found an RV that just needed a jump start, a military apc that was only missing 2 armor plates but otherwise functional, and lots of other vehicles. So I’m converting the apc into a mobile base or armored RV.
I’ve also been learning how to go thru labs without getting constantly driven to insane levels of pain and damage by turrets (got lucky and the nearby lab had the machine for doing diamond weapons and I had mats to do up a diamond katana).
I’m hoping to finally install the pile of sweet bionics I’ve been saving but the failure chance is still a bit daunting. I have drugs for it but have had really bad luck finding higher tier books for the related skills. So the mission now is to move (and/or use the mobile base) , find books, and ultimately try out bionics (I’ve yet to do them ever). The lab also revealed the map around me more so I can see I have some plant life I could mess with for continuing education.
I’ve also been messing with mutagens and even with the positive trait I still seem to get way more brutal negative mutations than anything remotely good for positives, such that I don’t even bother attempting unless I have plenty of purifier around to undo the disasters. I’ve grown to not care for the whole mutation thing.
A year seems like a long time to last but time flies when you’re a noob learning everything. Getting food never seems to be a problem and when you don’t even know how to do most end game things, they can’t kill you. I’ll get there. My previous “real” run ended about 30 days in and was going great til I hacked an id terminal at a military bunker and got vaporized by a turret. Some things take a while to learn (playing with vehicles) and some don’t!
Tanks mod is in experimentals, ja. Dropbox link in the thread for it ( http://smf.cataclysmdda.com/index.php?topic=10771.0 ) SHOULD work in stable, maybe. So long as Vehicle Additions Pack isn’t too far behind update-wise.
EDIT: Well. The truck that beheld the flattening of at least 50 zombies has met its end.

What about the ice cream truck and the armored van? The only similar things I have are Armored Cars and RVs/meth labs
Your daily moment of nope. You’ll never know what you find on the other side when you traverse the stairs. At least it wasn’t a gang of shoggoths surrounding the stairs, right?

Actually, that wouldn’t be QUITE so bad at the moment - NPCs will finally follow you up and down stairs, but nothing else does anymore.
Somehow I managed to escape a raging hulk through a forest fire after he smashed me and broke both of my legs. I held up at my base for weeks with 2 leg splints on (luckily I had the provisions). one leg healed completely, the other was still broken, so after trying to re-apply the splint multiple times I decided to head to the nearest hospital to look for the rumored healing machine.
Long story short, I got surrounded and pulped by a mob of brutes and everything in-between. It’s amazing how long Alice lasted with kevlar reinforced survivor gear on. I can picture the poor zombies breaking their teeth on the stuff for the 10 minutes it took for her to succumb. RIP Alice.
Now I’m reading the forums, don’t drink and Cataclysm.
Put an NPC on guard while they were sitting in the passenger seat of my new warvan and revved up the engine. Apparently NPCs on guard do not move with the vehicles they’re standing in. SPLAT.

I guess I need to update my version then. I got followed down a set of stairs by a hulk yesterday.

It didn’t end nicely.
Well, maybe that bug has been fixed. I hope so - I like to lure them from one floor to another to deal with them in smaller groups.
