Will they object to me looting that precious sanctuary?
Nope. Can make a decent base, too. Big space, surrounded by solid rock (not sure if that’s changed in the experimentals), center of the area.
All right, I’ll just LP and wing it. Gonna upload it within 24 hours or so. If you hear me trail off to an awkward silence, well, it’s my first ever LP, so it’s probably all right.
Seems it hasn’t. A large building made of rock, several rooms, a handful of lacklustre buggers usually playing statues [sup](or tins of long pork if they’re armoured and that’s your kind of thing)[/sup].
Wait I haven’t updated in a while. You can skin people now?
You can 'B’utcher people just as easily as you would zombies or wildlife. Don’t know if you can actually skin people and literally tan their hides though.
People don’t give out any hides yet, similar to the normal zombies.
I’ve mixed feelings on cooking by lava. Sure, it decreases the micro a lot, but the heat is really bad, especially if you’re making jerky or something.
Is there any active AC implemented? Maybe I can make a tiny AC’d vehicle to keep cool while cooking.
iirc there is a CBM. But not sure if it works on lava.
So, I’m new here and after reading several pages on this thread I started playing this game. Here’s some stuff about what happened within this 1 day (real time) and what I have already learned (and how dearly I have paid for these lessons).
To start with, over twenty characters died already and two were deleted (for now I play on live usb) within around half a dozen worlds. Most of these worlds were on easier difficulty (slow zombies and mundane zombies mods) in lastest dev (0.C). Two characters were sorcerers from fantasy classes mod (yes, I know they are so cheaty, and this “mana” :). Also you can take into account that I have some experience with roguelikes (dwarf fortress, angband, magband).
Beginnings were, I would say, masochistic. It was mix of freezing to near death, starving, thirsting, wandering aimlessly, running from zombies and learning why it’s better to take night vision and raid towns at night. All survivors ended in zombie’s stomach. Just newbie gameplay. I started to hate npc’s when my lab technican grabbed some science IDs and was robbed by some woman with flamethrower. I just thought she wanted to talk! I was outran by that thief and eaten by zombie dog. After that I made few bionic soldiers. Didn’t catch her though. Also, their utility ended along with ammo in the rifle. One died fighting with zombies, second commited suicide in the subway and last was shot by the bot near the city.
After some time spent playing (and many human losses to the zombies) things started going well. Characters now die with some good reason instead of “because you’re a newbie”. Some lessons for begginers here:
[ul][li]Keep your speed down when driving. Otherwise you will have a very explosive death (but it looks cool :).[/li]
[li]If you have guns, use them. You can’t shoot them if you leave them at home. Otherwise runner zombie will get you :)[/li]
[li]If you see a zombie brute, run. Hugging him is a bad option. But he can learn you ho to fly :).[/li]
[li]Don’t take “Challenge - Lab” scenario. 8 extra points may be tempting, but it’s an option for masochists. I lost all 4 characters to turrets (but it’s cool to lure zombie on an eviscerator floor :).[/li][/ul]
So, longest living character survived for 3 days, I managed to sleep for a few hours, can gather some food and drink, moved one truck near the shelter without blowing myself up and managed to defeat cold. Still trying to find a military bunker, a lab (on one map I had 2 near each other but couldn’t break through the zombies) and wondering how to get into a gun shop.
Any comments and hints are welcome. Sorry for any mistakes (english is not my primary language).
Epic way to start the game. o3o
Concerning guns, you need to use them carefully. Sound attracts enemies, so it’s best to use them as a hit-and-run weapon unless you’re able to kill every single thing that might follow the sound of gunshots.
And as for the lab? It’s doable if you’re careful. Always open a room’s door, take the time to see what’s inside, THEN go in if it’s safe. If you aren’t slowed down by freezing to death, you’ll still be fast enough to close the door on them without getting shot. Then just drop some token item in front of the door to remind yourself not to go in there.
Writing down what I think I should say on the introduction to the LP, mostly by listening to other Cata LPs. Winging it didn’t work for me.
But dang, I played a new game for fun, and it would have been great to LP that. When night fell, I just went up and wandered to town without any real plans, but came out with a ton of interesting loot and other things.
On the bright side, playing right now has been giving me some ideas on how to talk and comment on playing while doing the playing.
Seriously, I will LP this. Put too much thought on it and I won’t back out now.
Also, with the experimentals, it’s kinda fun to know the fates of the NPCs who had joined you. One wanted to die drinking herself to death after getting infected, but the group she was in decided that was a waste of supplies and shot her in the head.
And will be neat to see you LP. <3
Yeah, it’ll be fun playing a psycho character killing NPCs left and right if a)they no longer have anything I want, b)when they have something I want, and c)i feel like it.
Also, it seems that NPCs who’s joined me aren’t bothering to pick up items. Odd.
I like it that way, gives the little bastards from stealing my stuff. The new “NPCs need to sleep” thing gets annoying though.
They seem able to use healing items now as well. That and not picking up things is convenient. Hell, if I’m not killing them, I’d be willing to give NPCs stuff if they can use it, as long as they don’t pick up my loot on their own.

They’re waiting for the opportunity to strike, They’ll loot you while u sleep if you’re not careful >BU little buggers
they’ll slit you’re throat while ye sleep aswell, i bet half of them are cannibals aswell >BU
And then when ye find your dying spot with a different survivor, ye’ll find that npc still feasting on yer corpse >BU
I don’t trust em >_> They’re evolving. We’ve killed and eaten too many of them.
Clearly the answer is to kill and eat them first. Not necessarily in that order. :V
Ugh. I ran into a hostile NPC. He decided to shoot me in the face with his Winchester rifle. I was too far to cut him up so I ran but couldn’t quite make it out of range. I was just making it a really good run. Had a few false starts after that including finding a rapier early then losing it while fleeing a pile of zombies.
Best thing to do is always assume that the NPC moving toward you is a thieving bastard, and work your way from there.
That’s why I hurry as much as possible to get my diplomacy kit; a tazer and a loaded shotgun. A tazer alone works fine enough, though.
Now if only magma was more effective against NPCs, we could do dwarven diplomacy.
That’s a proper beginning. I did that myself (famished + dehydrated + exhausted + lots of pain; don’t remember if I died).
Keep your speed down when driving. Otherwise you will have a very explosive death (but it looks cool :).Another reason is that you can bust your vehicle's engine if you go too fast. I did that again today with my motorbike. Well, thanks I had almost all the stuff to replace it (now it can do 80 kph safely, much better than previous lousy 37 kph).
