My main issue is I never want to settle down with a permanent base I always make a mobile fortress where I can eat sleep craft and shoot stuff with giant guns. If I ever run out of space I just add onto the fortress with what I need. I also have horrid organization skills so at most you’ll just see one carrier for crafting/spare parts for crafting and repairing, with one for normal and one for electronics. I would tend to have a chem carrier for charcoal bleach etc. Then there are carriers one for weapons and ammo, one for clothing/armor and one for vehicle parts. As for books I either keep them in my bed or on one of the spare seats.
If I’m lucky, the piles on the floor will become equally-badly-organized piles in a solar-powered deathmobile.
I’m best at this “sorting” thing in Terraria, it seems. :V
I’ve never really gotten the hang of making mobile forts, in my case. I like one big permanent base where I can dump a ton of items and have a certain level of organization. Most of my vehicles is just one line of cargo carriers or trunks, meant to loot an area and bring all the stuff back to base.
That said, aside from that big base, I plan to make a number of smaller outposts in the future. Maybe settle for buildings that are already there instead of going through the tedium of making another one. My main issue with that is that I gotta do the organizing with the space that’s already there, though I’ve been managing that before even making my own. This is the first time I managed to finish a building project.
I do love the nomadic experience though. Even then I’ll often go the whole nine yards and convert an RV into a self-sufficient vehicle while maintaining a main home base in a safe area.
The Holy Roller was still my favorite vehicle idea though.
Also, some time I should see about clearing and fortifying an entire town.
I feel like the nomadic road warrior life is starting to get stale with me just ping ponging around looting the most valuable buildings I spot along the way. Found a lonesome regional school on a small island connected by a bridge that leads into a medium sized town that I think I could clear and turn into a nice home base. The only local hazards are the fact two fungal towers reside on separate unconnected islands to the southeast and northwest, meaning I’d have to swim over myself and burn them down.
Or just build a boat/ find an inflatable one, put all the weapons you need on the boat, sail over, amd torch the fungus that way.
You can build/find boats? I’ve yet to see one and nothing like an inflatable or something shows up in my crafting menu.
You need to have the Boats mod active
(Completely forgot to mention that, apologies)
Ah, I’ll have take a look at that. But building a Gunboat is now definitely on my list of things to do in the cataclysm. I’m trying to complete most of the Gods of the Cataclysm challenges anyway so stripping down to just the skivies, grabbing my new ace custom M107A1, a six pack of incendiary grenades, and swimming over should be fun.
I had thought cash cards where useless to me because I thought I could only use them to trade with NPC’s. I ended up noticing a object in a basket ball court. It was a vending machine. I started looking for cash cards on zombies I had killed before and found quite a few of them with good chunks of cash on them I purchased as many drinks as I could from a vending machine. Today I learned something today. Money isn’t completely useless in the apocalypse.
You can just smash em open as well… Vending machines do have absolutely ridiculous amounts of drinks though, the last one I cracked open had nearly 100 Volume worth of assorted drinks.
Cards are good if you can’t take on cop bots though, every single vending machine seems to be alarmed.
I’m not going to use them for anything else so it doesn’t really matter too much.
I don’t really see the point to making a permanent fixed base. By the time you get it set up properly, odds are good that everything hostile in the immediate area is already dead and you could just as easily sleep out in the open.
Personally I like to grab an APC, park it inside a fire station, and use it as the foundation of a proper deathmobile. The interior is just the right size, once you throw all those seats and crap out.
Starting work on converting an RV to solar power, towns are all scattered far and wide so it’s awkward. And no welder. ;w;
That is how my first and current fortress on wheels got started. Found a basically intact APC, drove it over to the wreckage of another one before I then decided to set about disassembling the wreck and reattached it wholesale to the rear end of my working one. A couple other cannibalized wrecks later and the end result is the double length armored personnel carrier I call home. I use the front half to hold my bed along with all the vehicle mounted crafting stations in the game while the rear is nothing but cargo carriers for bulk transport. I like to imagine my sixteen wheeled monstrosity nicknamed ‘Bastille’ is akin to one of those massive wheeled russian mobile launchers.
Holy shit, you’ve got to post a screenshot of that monstrosity. owo
I like to keep mine small enough to get through the city without having to plow through too much stuff. If you put cargo units on every tile that isn’t a crafting station or the seat, you can fit about 10k volume worth of storage into an APC sized hull. Unless you’re just hoarding for the sake of hoarding, that’s a lot.
A single 3.79 liter V6 engine, 16x wheels, a six point camera system, no windows, and a whole bunch of both kinds of solar panels on the roof. Needs some composite armor and quarter panels to replace some lost parts of the front ram, a couple portions of the interior front half are not armored yet, some heavy duty roof pieces are needed in the center seam to seal it up, and I need more cargo carriers to fill out the rear storage.
She’s about as long and wide as I’d be comfortable with driving. Can still pull U-turns at dead end forest roads and the like like without a problem. Haven’t had any issues with navigating city streets so long as they aren’t totally blocked off, though I’d be lying if I said there weren’t any tight squeezes. And there have been more times then I care to admit where I’ve gotten snagged on a car and was forced to sit there revving the engine trying to get free as the local zombie population converged on my position.
Shameless self congratulation ahead: so I just cleared out a nearby school with my survivor naginata. Impaling strike + wide strike = very efficient crowd clearer. It just mows through crowds taking out 2 or 3 at a time.
