I broke into a lab, and, over the course of it, I found about 15 cbms (only 2 I didn’t have and wanted) as well as a dozen assorted mutagens (2 feline:)) and several stupidly good books. Sadly, I need to go back with a jackhammer as I locked myself out of half of the 3rd and 4th levels.
Let’s see, rolled my combat specialist into a town at night, somehow ran into a zombie dance party and wasted all my ammunition before off into the darkness and proceeding to run into another zombie dance party ™. I base the weakest one to death with my SMG, but not before the previous ZDP arrived and decided they had dibs. I was then mauled to death (this was on classic on 1.4 spawn).
By Zombie Dance Party (ZDP) I mean a large group of zombies that are clustered really close together for no good reason. It didn’t help my solder had absolutely no night vision what so ever.
Keep a flashlight on hand to periodically look around, and remember to keep to the sidewalks. Try to move through the alleys of buildings as much as you can, or find the nearest sewer and crowbar dat.
Works for me.

Afraid so, Ninja. Static NPCs are recommended; Random, not so much.
So I just started up a fresh new world, initial looks are good. go downstairs shelter has a few nice things, I walk outside and what do I find?
Not only one CBM, 8 CBMs in a plane wreck, one tile from where I started

RNG luck, don’t think too much about it.
Yeah, the RNG gods are truly being kind to us at the moment. In my last new game, I walked out of the shelter to find 3 military crates which, upon opening with my makeshift crowbar, contained a ton of MREs and meds. Then, a house nearby had a scarf and a blanket, and another one had a ‘gun-nut’ basement, where I found dozens of guns and ammunition, including a 111F Savage! Woot, woot… 
Edit - Oh, I forgot to mention the fire station, which had loads of cool stuff in it as well…
I never seen plane crash. Ever. Playing cata for quite some time.
I’ve seen quite a few in various Let’s Plays that I’ve watched but, like you, I have never found one in any of my own games…
So, how does it look like?
From what I remember, they are a bit like the ones where the military vehicle has crashed/blown up; where the black boxes and stuff appear. Apart from that, I can’t really remember, sorry… 
Less loot, and TONS of standard zombies.
Heli-crash is pretty much it. No plane-crash map_special.
Found a suit and top hat in the same house.
I’m going to do my best to keep this guy alive and to keep his hat and suit intact,one simply must be properly dressed in such dark times!
