So, I just started up another character (the previous got mauled by two different hordes attacking thanks to an NPC flinging high explosives around). Standard item spawn, 1.5x Zombie spawn, static and wander, with size 5 cities. I’m 20 turns in or so, and it’s already getting interesting. To start with, my starting evac shelter is wedged between a city (with an office tower being the closest building), a FEMA camp, a beehive, a slime pit, and a triffid grove. Which, on the brightside, makes deciding where NOT to camp pretty darn easy.
As usual, I then proceed to the next step before setting out: check the basement. So I head down, open the door… and notice that there’s a LOT of stuff piled near it. Now, I’ve had it happen where the evac shelter is just filled to bursting with various supplies before, so I’m getting pretty excited at this point. Finding a nearby flashlight, I click it on, and…
WHOA. This shelter has EVERYTHING. Plenty of food, plenty of water, tons of clothing, various medical supplies, some packs, some general survival gear, a hotplate, a couple improvised weapons, some bedding, a spitter zombie… Wait, what?
Yes, among everything else, there is apparently a spitter zombie. In my evac shelter. Which resulted in a mad dash out of the basement and up the stairs to get a heavy stick to smack the crap out of it with. Thankfully, I survived with only minor injuries (and seriously damaged pants; why do they always go for the pants?), but if the rest of the game goes the same way, this promises to be a very strange and exciting run indeed (although also possibly very short).
(Mind, this isn’t the first time I’ve run into a zombie in the evac shelter basement. Another character (and my shortest-lived one to date) opened the door and promptly had a Feral Hunter eat his face. I think I need to start carrying a weapon into the basement from here on out.)
EDIT: Apparently “very short” was right. I steered clear of the city and headed into the woods to try and find some place safe to lay low. Spotted some dead scientists and thought I managed to steer clear of that, but a Mi-go clocked me from ~60 meters out and chased me clear across about 10 map tiles before it finally caught up. Never stood a chance.
