My overweight, near-sighted, addicted to tech scientist “Gordo Freeman” (I cheated him a crowbar in replacement of the chemical kit) has survived the lab run that included two Planet-X portals and several robots. He also lucked out by disabling a cyborg, passing all the checks so she join him, and finding enough anesthesic to remove all the female cyborg’s defective CBM’s.
Now “The Freeman” and “Chell” will roam the surface trying to twart the Goo Men’s (aka the G-Men) plans.
Usually my lab runs end in disaster, but not this one. I set the loot generation a bit higher than usual but the main thing is that there weren’t many enemy spawns. Six robots, 4 turrets, a black goo room and a dozen zombies. Ah, and the cyborgs of the operating room. Main obstacle was that it was a “city lab” that doesn’t have a science card reader but a generic one, so I needed to disassemble several TVs to cobble a hacktool to exit. I have to admit I panicked for a bit because I though I was going to lose the character because of that oversight.
It ended with a boatload of books, junk food and chems. Not many CBMs (notably, no Power Storage CBMs, so I did not install any of the ones I got), but there were 9 liters of anesthesic, so even after removing all the faulty implants from the cyborg, I have still enough once I find some PS units.
Atonement, perhaps an unobtainable goal but one that Aimy was compelled to pursue. As she looked at the two latest lost souls she’d freed, Aimy felt that just maybe she had travelled a step in the right direction.
I’ve gotten a bit burnt out on Aimy, I’m at the point where I’m just driving between likely loot spots with little risk unless I deliberately put myself in stupid situations and the value of those places are falling rapidly too. So i’ve decided to give her a break at least for a while and finally got around to giving Magiclym a go. I’ve gone with something I haven’t really done for a while and stol /cough/ borrowed a character, props if you know which without googling it I’m playing with Stats though killls since the characters from the setting have a pretty insane power scaling but I’ve bumped up the spawn rate to compensate (paradoxally, I’ve found that I tend to rack up higher body counts with less enemies around) and I won’t be using guns, customised vehicles and quite a few other things. The setting is post-apocalyptic so they have some high tech but it’s not really what they are used to, mostly it’s medieval/fantasy. I’ll probably keep going until Ashes has fully learned 4 schools of magic (or died trying).
Ashes Nei wondered where in the nine levels of hell she’d ended up, one moment she’d been in battle for her life and the next she’d been in some unfamiliar land, undead were everywhere. There was no sign of the necromancer responsible so with little understanding of the situation at hand she’d chosen to withdraw from the strange town.
I grabbed everything I could carry from the basement where I started and legged it, there were some useful books and a toolbox!! (bit out of place but I’m not going to complain). With 4x spawns and no gear, fighting was completely out of the question, I ended up taking a round about route though the local forests to a secluded cabin I spotted on the map, it’s nearly empty but it seems safe place to hang out for a bit.
Edit: Oh, and I’m going to work on taking her post-threshold Elf-A since she IS supposed to be a half elf/dark elf
Pine needle, dandelion, or herb tea. Whenever possible I drink those instead of water, nearly identical quench but they give a health boost. And it’s easy to get the ingredients.
Yeah, recovering prototype cyborgs is rough. It kinda felt like the CBM removal difficulty was too high to me when I did some removals a couple of weeks ago. Max book skills, 10 dex, 19 int (thanks to a Magiclysm spell), and a Nursebot assisting still left me with 30-40% failure rate on some of the nastier CBMs. The nursebot has maybe a 1% effect on outcome, which doesn’t seem like enough considering how hard it was to find a lab with a non-crazy one, and then the time it took to wait for it to randomly move into the operating room from outside.
Utilising her magic in the unfamilar place? plane? had proven difficult, her missing blade hadn’t helped matters either when she was forced to battle a demon spider. The creature was fast and agile, its fangs bubbled with some unknown poison but the strange armoured clothing Ashes had found and protected her and the crude knife she’d picked up had got the job done eventually. After the fight she’d hauled the body back to her current residence, curious if it could be rendered for spell reagents. This was a strange world she’d found herself in and she needed every edge she could get if she was to survive long enough to make her way home.
Only three kills so far and one of them is a demon spiderling, I’m a bit more nervous about running around in the dark now, it might be the encumbrance I’m currently stuck with but that bugger was fast and hard to kill. Still, the turnout gear I had stopped me from getting chewed up, swings and roundabouts I guess.
Arshes stroked the horses velvety nose gently as he whinnied at her quietly, she didn’t know what had happened to the owner of the farm but she was glad there was at least something familiar here.
She had claimed the horses and named them Halford and Nue after discovering the property deserted, leaving them would of just been leaving them for the undead that plagued this land. The buildings had looked abandoned, the animals too so she didn’t believe there would be any complaints and it would be good not to have to travel afoot anymore…
First time taming a horse and I got two seems to fit the theme though, now I have to figure out how I’m going to get them home… past the two groups of demon spiderlings… and the troll…
Edit: Managed to get them home and tucked into their new “stable”, as a bonus teamed up with a group of zombies to kill an owlbear and by “team up” I mean I let the owlbear rip them to shreads while I sat on the sidelines spamming magic at it . Not sure what an owlbear gastrolith is used for but hopefully I’ll find out at some point.
Ashes examined the magic dancing across her fingers thoughtfully, magic here was strange but she was quickly regaining her power. She had yet to regain access to her most powerful spells but what she had would do the job for now…
Mastered my first spell . I’m quite liking magic missle, it’s not the hardest hitter but it’s reliable and makes for a good replacement for a “pistol” type attack.
Robert “Gordo” Freeman and “Chell” exited the lab on day 6 to find themselves surrounded by robots. At that point she decided that sticking with me was not necessarily a good thing and left, to not be seen again.
Spent the next 30 days cleaning the area, kiting the zombies, retreating into the basement where any straggler got mowed down by the two surviving sentry turrets I managed to recobble. Spent another 30 days sorting the loot from the lab, reading books, with the occasional run to get food (two solar cars provided enough cells to power a single fridge, but not before all burritos, pizzas and milk around me spoiled).
By day 70, Robert was not “gordo” anymore, had reasonable knowledge of almost everything (from martial arts to tailoring), was reasonably well armed, and finally decided to step out and confront the outside world, maybe even lead a new colony.
On day 72, Robert stumbled by accident on a Mi-Go slaver, who promptly disabled him with extreme pain and killed him.
I honestly found extremely unfair and infuriating the killing of this character, as a single ranged attack left him at 0 of every stat. I wasn’t even trying to attack the alien. Essentially the mi-go slaver ordered him to drop dead, and he did.
Arshes sighed and wiped her hands on a convenient rag, she really wasn’t cut out for domestic life but it was that or wander at random and at least here she could practice and plan in peace. The smoking rack was all set up and she lit it with alittle flourish, it was completely full and there was much more to do after. She actively chose to ignore the source of the meat, she’d enjoy it more that way…
Gordon Frohman (no relation with Robert Freeman) was concerned about waking up in an unknown lab, but the A7 laser rifle did calm him -although he wondered why there were no exploding barrels on the lab.
He emerged the lab to be greeted by no less than three skeleton brutes that, impervious to laser fire (not that the UPS had many charges by then) proceeded to play volleyball with him.
