What’s an efficient way to kill hulk without a deathmobile?
I just died trying to kill one and I can’t be bothered to create a new character because I put tons of time and effort into this guy, and even though the world isn’t as Fun as it could be and is a bit outdated I decided I’m going to savescum anyway.
I didn’t realize how fast they close the gap on you, so as soon as it smashed me through a pile of rubble everything started to go downhill. I managed to put 9-10 RM13 shots into it before dying, damaging it “heavily” (shotguns 0, piercing weapon 0, marksmanship 5). Using arrows is out of the question. I didn’t have much luck with grenades on regular zombies, so I won’t try that either. Molotovs perhaps? A mininuke?
To take hulks out with a skilled melee fighter, channel Bruce Lee and let the hulk come to you.
(Skilled melee fighter here meaning “preferably level 4+ in melee and unarmed/weapon type of your choice”)
Hulks move fast, but their attacks are slow; that devastating slam attack especially. Running away makes you use up your turn, but if you hold your ground using 5 or space until the hulk steps into a neighboring tile, you get a brief window where you can attack before they get the chance. Combine that with a style that has knockback, counterstrike, strong blocks, and/or parry attacks, and train up dodge a little, and hulks become a lot less scary. (They can still ruin your day, don’t get me wrong, but they aren’t instant death.) Same tactic works against brutes and tough zombies, too, when your character is at low level and needs to worry about them.
If I’m in a situation where I can spare the time- say, the hulk is charging through rubble or across a field in daylight- I’ll pull out a fast, quiet ranged weapon like a crossbow or throwing knives and get in a potshot or two in while the hulk is closing the distance. (heck, I’ll even throw random stuff from my inventory like rocks, nails, radios, steak knives, cell phones…anything the least bit sharp or heavy is potentially a point or two of damage) As the hulk crosses the 3-4 tile away threshold, I then swap over to fists or a light fast weapon appropriate for the character, and start waiting for my window to strike. (If you can’t stow the ranged weapon fast, just drop it- you can pick it back up later. Or make a new one. You’ve got a hulk to deal with right now, and ranged weapons are more expendable than your limbs.) If you neglect ranged combat as much as I do, the whole process rarely does more than graze them, but every once in a while you get a lucky shot that makes the difference between a one-punch-kill and getting slammed through a wall. And hey: any chance you get for target practice…
I’ve had great success using this tactic with dragon style, scorpion style, tiger style, taekwando, karate, and escrima, and I imagine it’d work beautifully with Toad Style, Drunken Boxing and Capoeira as well.
