Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!

As for season length I play the the standard 14 day seasons. Should I consider longer seasons?

All up to preference and how hard you’d want challenges (I think season length also affects on how long it takes food to spoil, not too sure though.)

I play with 90 day seasons for extra realism, winters are hard but you learn a lot about survival, and alternate food sources.
Cataclysm makes you think outside the box and become crafty with pretty much everything.

I don’t suppose there’s a way to move a character and the map they are standing in to another world is there? Because I might have done goofed in world gen by a couple orders of magnitude. On the plus side it would explain why it takes 24 hours to disassemble a bench and 200 hours to half build a concrete wall…

Same here, but I usually do 91-day seasons, since that’s 364 days per “year.”

Yeah, I tend to pick 91 days just for the hell of it.

Is there any way to purify water without tablets, like boiling it?
I’m holed up at a little farm, and I’ve got plenty of food, but I don’t have more than a day’s worth of clean water left. The nearest town is a half day’s travel by car, and I’ve only got enough gasoline for a one-way trip. On top of that, I’m really really sick from eating two chunks of raw meat from a wolf I killed. I’ve only got ten rounds left for my sidearm.
In short, I’m not in any condition to travel.

Lit a fire, get a pot and a container with the dirty water and one empty. In the crafting menu, clean water is in the food section, this will get you clean water.

Boiling water is the default way to handle it, yes. >w>

Crafting menu, with “&” by default, check the food section, drinks subsection.

You need to light something on fire, have the unclean water nearby, along with a source of boiling quality. Teapot, stone pot, pot, frying pan, makeshift pot (More Survival Tools), empty aluminum can, empty tin can, empty steel bottle (More Survival Tools)…

And you need an empty container (OR one partially filled with clean water) in your inventory. Or several. Enough to equal the total amount of clean water you intend to make, if batch-cooking.

How long do the effects of eating raw meat/drinking unclean water last?
It’s going on 24 hours or so of
Your bowels are racked with pain!

Your head aches faintly.

Your vision is going fuzzy!

Goes outside to light fire

Sudden realization that I don’t have a lighter on me

Any other way to start a flame going?

That’s parasites, not food poisoning. Until you get some antiparasitic or bark tea, you’re boned.

And as for fire? 2 by 4, skewer, string…search your crafting menu for a fire drill. >_>

I think mugwort is the anti-parasitic one, right? You can find that by foraging.

Also, royal jelly is pretty much “get out of jail free” on all bad statuses (well, almost all).

Also, you can start fires with magnifying glass, as well.

Can someone tell me what the colour of read books means like i have gray, blue and yellow?

Derp. Red means you haven’t skimmed it yet. Blue means you’ve skimmed it, and you can gain experience in a skill by reading it. Yellow means you can learn recipes from it but can’t gain experience from it (either because you’re over the max level OR under the minimum level). Purple means your level is too low to gain experience from reading it, AND it has no recipes left to learn from it.

Finally, grey means you can gain never experience nor recipes from the book.

Plenty of ways. You can use glasses or a magnifing glass to concentrate sunglight. There are lighters, refillable lighters (use gasoline as fuel) and matchbooks. With survival skill, wood, some strings and a rock you can craft a camp fire drill, or a simpler fire drill (I have no idea how your character is set, but I guess this one is your best option, or…:with fabrication you can make flint and steel. With electronics you can craft an electronic firestarter, it uses batteries. There are other ways to boil water or cook meat, mainly hotplates. Look for hotplates (legit, uh?), coffe makers (uses batteries), RV kitchen units linked to a powered vehicle (look for RVs), same for chemichal kits; mess kits, charchoal smokers, the CBM called Integrated Toolset, atomic coffe makers. You can craft pretty much all of this items with hotplates, but it would probably be easier to make a Soda can stove kit or a hobo stove)

EDIT: Also Ember Carriers might come in handy. Many of the items I listed are in the More Survival Tools mod, I highly recommend it.

Thanks, Can you tell me how to charge vehicle batteries?

solar panels are the best way. A motor with fuel/ foot pedals in the same tile as an alternator works as a generator. You can also put normal batteries by (e)examining the car and going to the place where the batteries are at.

Ah cool thanks, Where would i find solar panels?

The easiest way is to look on the road for solar cars and getting some from there. There are also rare vehicles with upgraded solar panels and the such.

Ok cool thanks again, another question tho where is a good place to find normal batteries?
