Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!

Pfft.
Ear protection is overrated.
Not when currently a shot from an npc far away while you are inside your house makes you go deaf.
God damn it, so that’s what keeps happening.

Can this be fixed without losing my saves, I wonder?

Also, random question. Butchering quality of a bladed weapon. What does it actually do?

People who like not eating that double-damage effect anytime something hits them in the face?

A random dragon shall have a random answer for the random question. It affects the odds of getting decent returns from butchery. Far as I can tell, survival skill is far more important there, but butchering with a tool that has a NEGATIVE butchery quality will have a noticeable effect.

People let them self get hit in the face?

Clearly you’ve never been booped to death by zombie facegnawing or a giant-wasp-stingathon before. ;A;

I wonder why your not like permablind in that eye when you get impaled by a stinger in it…let alone rabid dogs biting them…somehow

Speeds up butchering. Time to butcher is multiplied by (100-quality)/100, where the quality is the highest butchering quality in your inventory.

How should I go about constructing a deathmobile?

Acquire infinite source of welding and a lot of food.
Infinite source of welding can be either a welding rig mounted on a vehicle with battery and solars or engine+alternator or integrated toolset CBM with some good source of power.

Then just weld the vehicle.

Ah, thanks, but I was asking more in terms of vehicle design and layout.

Also, how do I fire the M203? (Yes, I’ve attached it to my rifle, and yes, I have 40mm rounds.)

Hm.

But… when you use that quick tasks menu I seem to recall it listing butchering with the wrong item. I think it said it was going to use my awl pike when I have a scabbarded broadsword on me…

Press capital F (shift f) to change modes like you would to change between single shot and burst until it selects the grenade.

Also you need to reload it separately from your main gun ammo. It should give you the option when you press the normal reload key.

What you probably want to do is secure some kind of rugged armored vehicle in drivable condition which you can then alter and improve upon. My favorite is an armored personnel carrier, but a SWAT van or a security van or somesuch will probably do. Just look for reinforced windshields, some kind of armor, and heavy duty frames.

Then you take it someplace safe where you can work in peace. Almost anywhere can do if you’ve really cleared it out thoroughly, but my favorite is a fire station. You can get your vehicle inside where the fire engines would go, there are no windows or wooden doors for zombies to bang on, and it already has a bed. Just make sure you really CAN handle the area, don’t get yourself trapped inside.

Okay so now you’ve got something to work with, and a place to work that’s hopefully stocked up with tools you’ve been hoarding. You have been hoarding tools, right? Have a cargo unit on wheels to drag around and loot with. Grab every single acetalyne torch you can find. Get a welder, welding goggles and a shitload of batteries. Duct tape, hacksaw, jack. Keep your eyes open for hardware stores and garages.

Now that you’re ready to go to work, the first thing to do is repair your salvaged vehicle, or at least any parts of it you don’t plan to rip out. After that you can begin to make some simple changes that will increase the durability of your would-be deathmobile.

Move your fuel tank to the center of the vehicle, where it’s less likely to be damaged. If your vehicle has wheels on the frontmost row of squares, move them back one. Maybe add a bumper of some sort, possibly with spiked plating as armor for the extra damage. Get armor of whatever sort on every square, because the default vehicles only armor the outer layer of tiles. Exactly what kind you use will depend upon your skills, but try to get at least steel plating on every tile.

Get curtains on all your windows and doors so you can close them and break line of sight with the world when you’re trying to sleep. Add a bed if you want, but a seat is actually pretty comfortable for sleeping. Try to get cargo containers on every free interior tile for max hoarding.

Get you an electrical system. Look for electric cars to salvage parts from since they have storage batteries and solar panels. Get a good number of storage batteries in there, get some solar panels on the roof, and make sure your motor has a truck alternator attached. Get some lights on your vehicle. Floodlights and headlights.

Slap in some water tanks and at least a faucet. Then you just add stuff either as you find it, or as your skill grows enough to craft it. Things you want to get are a kitchen unit, a FOODCO kitchen buddy, a vehicle welding rig, and probably a vehicle mounted forge and chemistry lab eventually. You definitely want security cameras on the edges of the vehicle and a camera display on the same square as your seat, as soon as it’s available. Eventually maybe you’ll get a minireactor.

Weaponry will depend upon your skills, the mods you’re running, and what you’ve found. I very thoroughly recommend the Vehicle Additions Pack and the Tank Mod since they add a lot of different weapon options. Even without any guns though, you should be able to zoom past zombies and not have to worry over plowing through a few of them.

Wow, thanks for all that!

Nobody answered me about when the next stable release would be, though…

You know what sucks? A zombie spitting three gallons of acid at you while being groped by a bunch of other z’s.
On related note do I need to wear two leg splints if both legs are all acid burned down to nothing?

Why would anyone care? Experimental is soooo much better, and the updates are like 5 a day.

In all honesty I’m just not sure sorry, if I knew I’d tell you but… I don’t. There is probably a thread dedicated to that if you care to look, If I see it though I’ll shoot you a link ^.^

There already has been a thread asking what the plans are regarding the next stable release, yeah. as it stands, we seem to have NPCs and z-levels to be unfucked first.

I think once you do this step, it is going to be more classified as a mobile base as you can practically live in there now.

when you make death mobile your base is just warehouse, everything what you need is on car

Is it worth updating daily/regularly with experimental? Are there really changes/fixes that often or is it just automated building? I’ve been updating frequently but wonder if it’s actually worth it.

Good points have been made and there’s some good reading in the wiki or other threads on this specific topic. Vehicles have become one of my favorite parts of the game. I spent several hours putting together my current mobile base and quite a bit of time prepping before I even started constructing.

I usually start my vehicle immediately - conceptually at least. As I explore and scavenge I’ll note (on the map) salvageable parts or functional vehicles - I’m usually looking for RV parts like fridges, kitchen unit; vehicles with high amounts of gas to siphon, military vehicles with armored wheels, heavy duty frames, and/or composite armor to pillage, and nearly functional armored vehicles to use as a foundation with minimal fuss (or one that’s fully functional is even more of a boon). As I somewhat clear the area around my camp/base I’ll slowly start accumulating vehicles to cannibalize, and once my skills are adequate I’ll get more serious about doing some field work (like replacing tires on an otherwise suitable basis for a vehicle) so I can move it to a safer location for building it out.

It takes more effort and tools (anvil/forge/crucible kinds of things) to make frames and other beefy parts so I usually try to gather excess vehicles to strip or use some functional normal car/whatever to run around stripping parts to use. Use the advanced inventory function to move the heavy crap around/into your vehicle.

My current rig started started with an armored personnel carrier (not sure of the exact name) which is good since it’s roughly the size of an RV and already features heavy duty frames , some composite armor, etc. They also already have security cameras you can reconfigure. I switched it over to gas and a V12, added a large electric engine and a bunch of extra batteries, extended the length a bit, reconfigured quite a bit of the “walls”, wheels, and such, loaded it up with solar panels, floor trunks, stow boards, - everything including the kitchen sink, and decked it out more like an RV (it’s pretty much a heavily armored and more fully kitted RV).

The one thing I don’t fully have under control, if it can be under control, is damage control on the front end. There seem to be a lot of ants out and about and after plowing thru 30 or so of them I usually need to replace destroyed spiked plating on my front “bumper.” I’m not sure if the spiked plating is worth using vs just putting composite armor there. I also lose solar panels frequently but it’s expected (due to having so many unsafely placed). So another thing to remember is to carry plenty of spare parts and mats to do repairs.

I wish you could tow or otherwise take another vehicle along with you. I grew fond of the hatchback I tweaked to use while building up my current mobile fortress. It was great for scouting around and getting thru all the wrecks in town. Sad to leave it behind and the folding bike is a nice option but not quite the same. :stuck_out_tongue:

Sometimes you get a slow day with no merges, sometimes it’s a dozen major additions a day. ^^"
