Wait, traps don’t do anything, you have to manually bait animals into them?

I thought I could just set some fish and squirrel traps or whatever, and then come back and something would just spawn in it via RNG.

I’m pretty sure (s-/)he talked about these traps, not the fish trap, which (based on the code) works like you described.
The fish trap actually uses and trains the survival skill (or at least used to, the last time I’ve checked) and not the trapping skill.
