I started when the game was really basic so I had time to get into each of then new features as they were added, but for someone joining now, the best advice I can give is that there is a TON of features, and a TON of depth. There might be a bit more of a learning curve than your average game, especially if you aren’t used to roguelikes. Start by reading the forums a bit just to see what kind of stuff to expect, avoid spoilers for the most fun, and get ready to die. A lot. Make sure you save a template for whatever class you like, because you’ll be recreating a lot, and it’s good to have a basic idea for a character you can edit each time you die instead of starting from scratch each time.
Once you get in the game, your priorities are to get a decent weapon, some decent clothing/armor, and then some food and water. Once you’ve gotten basic survival down, your next goal will be to avoid as many fights as possible until you get your skills up. I highly recommenced you get the Fleet Footed Trait and the Quick trait until you get ,more used to the game. That will allow you to outrun most basic enemies. Also, try to stick to the outskirts of towns. If you see a bunch of houses, thats usually the best way to get into a town. If you start moving deeper in you’ll find yourself swarmed fast. For ultimate safety, avoid towns until nighttime.
Other than that, just try not to read too much. The real fun is exploring and learning things your own. I understand if you read to understand how to put a car together or something, but try to find things out yourself. I’m still discovering tons myself, and more is always being added.
Edit: Also get yourself an emergency weapon as soon as possible. A shotgun, a grenade, a molotov, whatever. Just have something that can do massive damage and hold on to it at all times. It will be the difference between life and death.
