You would not believe how easy it is.
I usually bounce of tutorials and help things but this dude, who made an awesome game called Gunpoint, is making a tutorial. It’s not in the direction you want (trading) but it’s like, the best way to learn its core, its things, its language and its awesomeness. To tell you a thing, by the end of the 4rth video I was already branching off and making my own game!
I hope the length does not put you off. The videos are really fun and I found it’s a charm to listen to him.
After that I am pretty sure you will be able to do most stuff. There are like 15 videos and counting but after the third one you will know most stuff! Also woah, I have never seen such a community. Just search how to do X in game maker and the answer is always there.
So like, I think you pass that (and reproduce it and stuff) and then we can basically go wild! Being a trading game it will have a lot of numbers but that will be easy. Trust me!
How many character drawings for the collab have been done? If everyone could post a link with theirs, that’d be really helpful! Forgot to save them, and they are hard to search for.
Hnnnngggg i want that game to be done! I am already helping a friend with GM, i insist i can help you if you want!
Of course it would be different than the game i am doing but that means we would both learn!
Didn’t exactly have a Tec-9 Magazine reference up when doing it, only put up the picture of CS:GO’s Tec-9 and didn’t really think of adding detail to the Magazine 'cause people would get the gist.
Thanks, and I’ll have a little more detail next time I draw a Mag.
Aw yeah, that looks good!
Also here’s a little snippet. Just practicing drawing human faces so I can draw 'em better.
-nice face brah-
-Seb is a cool dude that rekt Coulter by sending him elsewhere and is respected by a bunch of people but Chaz thinks he’s a bit scary-
Very nice face, 10/10.
Also Seb sounds like a cool guy, will he be making an appearance in more of your story segments?
Alright, so far with the basic GameMaker interface (No code involved, I just used the drag and drop stuff) I was able to make a spaceship and make it move around in sort of a tile-based manner (I want the interface to be primarily tile-based much like our beloved Cata).
Also yes, Seb will likely show up at some point in a doodle!

Though I’d tell you to stay away from drag & drop, that’s pretty cool! Also, what do you mean in tale based manner? Explain, I seriously like to chat about this.
Well, much like Cataclysm and other roguelikes, I want to make a top-down trading game where your character (I’m still not sure whether to go for a space game or a cyberpunk not-space game) moves along, constrained to squares in a grid. So for instance when I press up on the keyboard, the ship will jump forward to the next tile in space, rather than moving forward smoothly.
I figure this would work best since I want to make my game turn-based, so that a player has time to think about where they want to go for their next trading run!

nice. the fact that you are actually doing this fills me with all of the hype, as you have yet to disappoint on any of your created worlds, and that is really rare.
Of course now I feel all of the pressure, and I have difficulty working under pressure aaaaaaa
It will be a thing eventually, but between work experience and an impending broadband upgrade through which I wanna stream stuff, my doofy game ideas are sorta being sat on the back burner for now. I at the very least know the basics of using GameMaker now, so when I have the time and the willpower I’ll definitely do it, but right now I feel like I have a bit too much on my plate as is, and I’d much rather relax and play games for the time being than worry about making or running them, ahaha.
if you want more place to get ideas from try Caravaneer and Caravaneer 2 By: Games of Honor. They are nice post apoc trading games, with great NPC interaction going on. http://www.gamesofhonor.com
If I am not mistaken most of their other games are crap though.

wait, 2 is out? nice
has been for a while now, its on Kongregate and the maker’s site Games of Honor. Only sites I know of anyways. 2 Is really cool flows a lot better especially with the way they revamped the map and redid the traveling so it no longer ‘remember the degree to go then do so yourself’ but gets really hard to progress after the first mission to beat off the raiders (don’t worry it takes awhile to beat it) I recommend building up your caravan with pack animals when you can. Theres no way to get enough supplies to make the further journeys fast enough without pack animals such as donkeys. Especially try and get some females as the milk production once they are pregnant makes for a great supplement your water stores. Prioritize rations appropriately.
eh I found the 1st one great the 2nd one I just idk. haven’t had to time to do much with and by time I mean will. there are just so many really long rpgs out there

Take your time Chaz, Relax! Because one of the biggest reasons things don’t get finished or turn out plain bad is pressure and rushing the production! It sounds like a really interesting idea for a game, as I’ve never quite heard of the genre so it may be cool to check out when YOU feel it is ready for a release.
Also, don’t wanna make you feel you have to but; maybe cameos from others on the forum here? nudge-nudge
