What's Happening in YOUR Randomly-generated Apocalypse?

That would be realistic. Crossbows are harder to make and use than bows.[/quote]

“Make” I’ll grant you, but no, crossbows are quite a bit EASIER to use than bows. QUITE a bit. Point and shoot.

The only usage advantage the bow has over the crossbow is rate of fire.

(The repeating crossbow trades the other way - it gives up power/range for rate of fire… still easier to use.)

Well, point and shoot then put the crossbow on the floor, stand in the loop without falling over and then turn the crank until it’s re-strung.

I suppose weaker crossbows might just have you pull the string back manually? I’m not sure.

… I still want to be able to convert the Heavy crossbow into a Piecemaker from Discworld…

Hence the rate of fire problem. Very VERY easy… just time consuming (compared to bows).

Yes, there were several different ways to get the string back, depending on the size and strength of the crossbow in question, but none of them were difficult. That was why they were fielded instead of bows - the extra it cost you to field the actual equipment was MORE than made up for in the ease of training and the extra range and power.

I assumed the basic crossbow was the type you could feasibly cock by hand anyway. <.<

What’s this about a disabling cities setting? Where is that? Does it leave “towns” or does it make the whole world basically woods? When I play STALKER mode, I usually turn city size to 2 and drop item spawns way down.

Started an Ambush playthrough earlier this week. I haven’t played it in a long time, so I decided to give it a go.
And boy am I having a blast.

Getting the Survivor with all the goodie weapons like a katana and SCAR-H and mauled grim howlers outside my new cabin. I quickly raided the dressers for some extra warm clothing and went outside to deal with the Zeds. (I didn’t trust my flamethrower wielding NPC to do it.)
Once I got that taken care of, I searched the food stores and found some guns while scouring the house. Found a Remington 700 with a few extra rounds. Sweet.

I then made systematic raids to a nearby mansion, collecting books, weapons, and food. I had a good stockpile of perishable and non perishable foodstuffs in my stores. Went to a nearby gas station and found a battered electric SUV with a roadmap in it. Used the roadmap and got an idea on where the cities were. Went back and took quests from NPC’s to find a direction where cities were at.

Found a city and then made back and forth raids for food, medical supplies, weapons, ammo, tools, the sorts.

Also found a lab, which I raided with no problems due to finding a science ID card, and walked off with a bunch of chemicals, books and mutagenic items.

After reading and getting my skills up, receiving training from a few friendly NPC’s, I eventually reached acceptable levels of awesomeness. I fixed up the SUV and pimped it out with more gear for raiding the nearby city.

I just made a recurve reflex bow, and thanks to books and a few helpful NPC’s my archery was above 5. I was able to hunt and kill at a distance with remarkable power.

I tested my bow in the sewers, and butchered the meat I acquired for food (It’s pretty hard to come by in the winter) I converted it into jerky and wandered around the forest and found a ruined cabin.

Looked around and found nothing of interest until I looked in the barn and found a massive stockpile of food and clean water (Water which I desperately needed since it was too tedious to take long trips to a river)

I had tons of 30-55 gallon drums full of clean water.

It is hinted that a survivor lived here evident by the survivor gear in a corner.
With that, i’ll craft a cargo carrier wheelbarrow and cart all this back to my cabin.

Basically, you can set city size to 0. That removes cities and roads. So far the only manmade structures I’ve seen are the occasional lab, farm, and mansion.

so you can still get things like books and cbms

Maybe. I made an illiterate character though, so nyeh.

I could’ve murdered my starter NPC that I abandoned, or raided the mansion for supplies, but instead I’ve been sticking to the proper nomad experience. I did encounter a few scattered piles of clothes near some netherworld monsters. Presumably the bodies rotted away due to a winter start. Took the ID card and cut up all the clothing. And then I didn’t even USE any of the material for anything besides grinding tailoring a bit. o3o

Imagine if someone managed to make a game like STALKER with the features of Cataclysm…

Only if you could join the bandits. ;w;

Certainly would be hella fun, but how many times have you seen a first-person RPG do vehicle physics well, let alone allow the construction and heavy modification of vehicles? (e.g most of the racing games out these days allow you to change stuff like the suspension, spark plugs and other random stuff, but those are for car-nuts-- and there’s still nothing like adding on extra wheels, engines, bodywork etc.)

I mean hell look at the upcoming fallout 4-- finally we can create a house/settlement ingame-- no creation kits, no DLC or required 3rd party mods etc.
Also it looks like we’ll be able to gun from a vertibird, but that looks like the typical COD ‘get to da chopper, gun down infidels!’ scripted sequence.
Looks like the customization system should be pretty fun though. They said they’ve eliminated vendor trash, but I’ll believe that when I see it.
If they added a playable vehicle system that had the sheer customization of Cata I’d be happy-- as long as it didn’t play like the Mass Effect’s Mako.

Honestly, I found the Mako pretty fun when I first played ME, but it honestly doesn’t feel like you’re driving a vehicle.
Also no totally destructible environments, so no driving through villages in your doomtraption and laughing at the pieces. :frowning:

with some mods you can have some cata like fun in minecraft, but instead of deathmobile you have flying mobile base because every turret mod do not work well with vehicles

and generated buidling are mostly bad

not to mention that it lacks cbms but i saw one mod with mutations

and vehicle colision system is not perfect

why roguelikes must be so awesome?

Huehuehue. Well, back to my wandering. I hunger for suggestions on what to do. ;A;

EDIT: I swear, what is which beavers banzai-charging me? They’re like miniature mooseseseses.

EDIT 2: Found a bunker. Guess I could make use of it, possibly.

Doomtrain.

Two options for Maximum width: 5 or 7 tiles – one wall each side with 3 internal spaces, or 5 internal spaces.

Connecting tiles between each cabin/car must be exactly one (1) tile in width and a maximum of three tiles in length.
Each car must be between 10-15 tiles long.

Now make the fanciest damn doomtrain that ever was, sir.
Remember, you’ll need:

[ul][li]Engine at the front. Extra points for pike-nose ram/rollers to sweep detritus off the track. Fill this will all your engines.[/li]
[li]Fuel/water car right behind the engine.[/li]
[li]Luxury Passenger cars. Perhaps with an internal bar and barrels of whiskey, or a dining area.[/li]
[li]Freight, mail or flatcars. External or internal, it’s all good. Fill with things like cargo spaces and external fuel tanks.[/li]
[li]Optional: Defence nodes inbetween each car sporting your choice of turrets.[/li]
[li]A caboose, or an armory car to carry all the guns and explosives. Probably needs extra defence.[/li]
[li]Armored cabins with 2-tile wide walls.[/li][/ul]

Megabonus: Armour and frames are limited to wood only. Anything else metal is fine.
DoubleMegaBonus: Re-Enact Speed. Never change direction-- your aim is the end of the earth. Driving slower than the maximum safe speed is instant failure.
Style Points: No mufflers. Install every truck horn you can find. Toot horns as you near towns and villages. The Doomtrain is always on time.
Land Speed Record: Trains were once the fastest vehicles on land. Make it so once again. ( 3 Car minimum.)

Herpity derpity. Not very likely for my illiterate wanderer. >.>

EDIT: I have spotted Blinky. Sorely tempted to hunt it.

the ghost?

Nope. The feeesh. o3o

EDIT: Go away beaver, I’m trying to cook mutant fish jerky!

are you sure its not a ghost fish?

Well it is NOW. o3o
