I’ve now posted on these forums a couple times, generally about my characters’ brilliant successes and the terrible ways they’ve died as a direct result of my stupidity.
Today, though… Today, is not one of those days. Today, my survivor-of-33-days Herrith Sebon was taking his mobile military-plated base for its first test drive, exploring a new section of the map. He was tearing down the road at around 70 miles per hour in a fully fueled, fully-stocked vehicle that was wholly armored and built from an APC. It was as he drove this incredible vehicle at incredible speeds that he spotted a tank drone on the horizon, guarding a military blockade.
Sigh. I don’t generally live long enough to have awesome vehicles and well-equipped characters, and on the ONLY occasions that I have done so, they’ve died to military ordinance like that tank drone. So even as I’m slamming on my brakes and trying to get the hell out of dodge, I know it’s over. There’s no way I can survive this; there was never any way. It was inevitable. I know I’m being proven right as the first explosive rounds pelt the front of my vehicle while I’m still moving towards it. My trenchcoat is shredded by debris, my arm is crippled. An entire chunk of the craft is torn free and left in the road. My vehicle comes to a stop and the thing is still firing. Again and again and again, the APC is pelted by explosives as I back up and turn to let the side of the vehicle take the brunt of the damage.
And then, incredibly, I made it out of range. The front of my would-be fortress is in shambles, and my torso health was a single red semicolon, but… I survived. I survived to see day 34 of the cataclysm, and I learned a valuable lesson in the process; don’t go down that road again.
