What is the best building to convert into a base?

Right now I just settle down in whatever house I can find, generally either on the edge of town or in one of those tiny towns that only has maybe five buildings in it.

That said, I did go to extreme lengths to find rocks for making a fireplace with, on the advice of the IRC channel.

Fire stations are the best by far. No windows, all metal doors, and enough room to get a vehicle inside.

I’ve taken an extreme liking to mining underground and then building a base from that. In the release, there’s a few exploits to make it more homey. Solar panels will recharge underground if you spend enough time on the surface. It’s also possible to bring dirt underground; if you want to make an underground farm or dig a pit for a well (Build a half-wall and then destroy it, marloss bliss, mycus bloom to name a few).

Since I build underground, there’s tons of rock for me to build with, stone walls and fireplaces are no issue. More importantly, I can setup nearly everywhere, and there’s very few interruptions underground.

Ice labs.

With temperature now affecting rot, you can keep your food fresh forever. FOREVER. Make a bunch of tasty snacks, drop em down 1 z level, pop down to grab one of the still fresh cheeseburgers two weeks later. Tastes like victory.

Also that whole metal doors thing, and since you can now build metal doors to seal off the main entrance…well there’s all the fortifications you need. Unless a T-rex is chasing you. T-rex don’t care.

You reminded me of why I don’t go to a certain forest. thank you. xD silly t-rex.

My latest elaborate base I built in the pump station of the town filled with irradiated wanderers that is

a reference to Fallout 2’s Necropolis

It has water pumps for infinite water, ample space and a small courtyard that’s easy to wall off and make solar panel farms and a garage in. It has plenty of windows that need boarding up, though, which is a bit annoying.

Other than that I also like public works since they have a fenced in courtyard that you can reinforce with log walls fairly easily to avoid most zombie wildlife. They also come with two garages for your car and plenty of pre-built lockers and other furniture to make it feel like home.

On that note, I really like shuffling furniture around to make a bedroom and a kitchen in my bases. Sometimes I also make a separate room for crafting with a forge and various utilities.

My shopping cart is the inly base i had for the last 10 characters. However if I’m in the mood for base building again i will probably chose a evac shelter. The console’s light is great for reading, the basement provides extra storage space and usually you have a town for loot neaeby. Once i settled in in a cave which was super cosy.

my favorite bases are fire stadion (only downside of it is lack of light inside) and sewage plant (best base so far) but for me base is just for crafting and storing items in it in late game i spend more time in my car than in base going back only to empty my cargo carrers or i have to craft something because i am too greedy for volume to place crafting stuff i only have military mess kit (200)(UPS) for cooking things on the road

Military. Trucks. Gargantuan, well-expanded, full’a trunks, modified down to Lucifer’s burning butthole, indestructable, not ever fitting trough a Garage’s door… Military truck.

Well, at least, that’s my objective. Seriously, if your vehicle runs through a Giant Frog and Mosquito infested screen only breaking a quarterpanel (to be fair, it was already badly damaged), he deserves to be made into the most badass home of your life filled with basically everything needed for survival.

Usually I just like to build my own stonewalled hut with a nice secure metal door, but it usually takes a lot of time to get the skills to do that and have essentially an impregnable fortress.

But usually I just camp out in the starting evac shelters. Plenty of rags and thread, metal and wood to keep you going for a while. The best part is the active monitor in the shelter though, because I can do sewing and reading at night! Forever! Wheee!

The main problem people will think is OMG 8 WINDOWS UUGGHHH ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING but it really isn’t hard to just make spiked pits outside said windows. Then board up the windows. It really is t hard.

What’s that? A jabberwock smashed down your wall? Well… ha… uh… alright shit. Starting shelter down, retreat!

But for me just upgrading evac shelters is sufficent because its a nice shaped house with a basement, good space and a easy symmetric design to work with. And the fucking monitor’s awesome infinite light is so good and can’t even begin to tell you. Screw yo’ fancy atomic night lights (but those are pretty amazing too.)

I love the one map-square office building. No windows besides the 2 meeting rooms at the front which are still separated by doors, plenty of desks and stuff for wood, and a back exit for an easy escape. I played long enough in that general area that there werent any zombies left. Which then led me to building a mobile base and crashing into a gas station…

At least it was a blaze of glory! Unless your vehicle just kinda stopped and you went flying through the windshield with no explosions. I guess that’s kind of glorious too, though.
I think my ideal base would be the evac shelter or fire station.

I guess that ultimately, its a 2-story motel near river (fish) and swamp (salt) and large forest. They have second story, which atm cant normally be built and is great thing, and also a pool. Though they require extensive reconstruction. OTOH, you can kite Zombies by running circles between the two stairs on different level, but thats exploiting.

I admit that food freeze lab is something i would like, but i pick the outdoor second story instead.

I’m finding the refugee centre to be great, spoilered for those that haven’t discovered one yet. I mean permanently on overhead lights for 24/7 crafting no matter the weather? Lots of furniture to dismantle and turn into more useful stuff? Crates of goodies? NPCs to steal and trade with? Secret rooms to practice combat skills on crappy zombies and nab lots of food from? Not to mention a bunch of working vehicles right outside, fuelled up and ready to go. Not bad, not bad at all.
