Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!

I read somewhere on the wiki that the missile events don’t work right yet, thus you can’t fire a nuke at a fungal bloom and have happyface.funtimes

Enter is indeed the input command, if it worked, the map will display a square of craters, so it’s pretty easy to check out since you don’t have to go anywhere.

then it didn’t work
As for fitted clothing: It’s not skill dependant, though at low skill levels it might take a while to actually fit it to your size or make it more sturdy. You’re just about spot on with the torso and legs thing though. Pretty much anything made of cloth or wool that goes in those slots can be fitted.
Under armour, soft/hard sleeves, gloves and hats seem to be the most major exceptions.
What clothes can be fitted is determined by the “mfb(IF_VARSIZE)” attribute. If a item type has it then it can be fitted, if it doesn’t then it can’t. Items with it will also sometimes spawn with the (fits) bonus applied to them already. As is pretty much all clothing made out of wool or cloth can be fitted, and a fair bit of leather stuff too (though I don’t know if there is a way to fit leather articles at the moment).

And I’ll take a look at the alloy CBM’s and see if we can get them to play nicely with clothing.

I think I read something in the git issue-tracker that nukes only worked if you fired at something in your current overmap sector (large block of tiles on the map screen; figure 30-40 square??). That could be the problem.

I have a tip.
For those of you surviving in the wild, i sugest only buchering corpses when you need food. Corpses don’t rot, but food does. However, if you have lots of salt and you can make beef jerky, disregard the comment, as it does not rot. Also, if you find a cabin make it your home, it has a wood burning stone so cooking water/food is easy. Just [D]rop wood onto it, and [a]ctivate a lighter or something. Also it has tons of storage. And always keep your empty water bottles because you can’t for some reason, boil all the water in one bottle and put it back, you need another bottle.

I’m sure I have butchered corpses of stuff a few days after killing it and it yielded rotten chunks of meat.

True for me also, corpses do indeed rot over time and leave rotted meat when butchered. However, since rotted meat can be used in cooking with no adverse effects it doesn’t really matter all that much anyway.

Do weapons break after a lot of use?
I’v had some games were I was taking on some zombies only to find my Katana, or whatever magically turned to fists.
that or are zombies grabbing em from me?

They’ll get stuck and pulled free even with very high strength. The more cutting damage a melee weapon does the more often it sticks, with strength acting as the counterbalance.

Funny that you mention it, I just had a katana get pulled free in a zombie hulk. I left it there. I’m using a bat now.

Cool tip. Next time an RV Kitchen Unit is too heavy to move, build a bookshelf with the construction menu and move it over the unit. The bookshelf will collect all the junk underneath it then you can move it with the move furniture command. Probably a good way to collect logs and 2*4s for construction too.

Use a nailbat. It’ll get stuck in, but even with ~8 STR you’ll be able to pull it free ninety-nine percent of the time.

Combat knives are pretty good too once you get your cutting skill up above one and read some up on some spetsnaz shanking.
Best part? You can butcher stuff with them too. I actually kept that knife as my main weapon, when I usually just stick to my crowbar (or in really exception situations decide to make a nailbat.)

Also on the bookshelf moving thing, you can move it over beds as well. Although it doesn’t seem to collect them, more like erase them dwarven atom-smasher style.

Here’s a question. Can an unarmed specialist still kick ass if both his arms are chopped off?

When it gets stuck, you lose 3 turns. Next time you get stuck, hit P and watch how long it takes you to swing 5 times. Nail bats don’t get stuck as often as other cutting weapons, but getting stuck just once decreases your damage output dramatically.

good tip is to craft a bone needle as soon as possible and carry it with you always as it ways nothing and it alows you to fit and repair your gear,

hey rook how`s that comic coming?

also how often do traps break?

and to answer your question, your blade is getting stuck in the body, I don’t know if skill or stats effect this but they might

I’m stuck in a cavern and extremely confused on how to get out. Any tips?

Not all caverns can be gotten out of. It is very possible to end up stuck at the bottom of a hole without any way to get out.

Traps don’t break as long as they’re active and set, or at least that’s what I’ve seen. I’ve not tested snares fully though.
I’ve never seen any of my traps damaged by acid rain either once they’ve gone off, thank god. Seriously the amount of squirrels that wander into my beartraps is unreal. I trapped the alley behind my house as a means to escape any hulks or hard targets. When I finally find a hulk and lure him back?
Squirrels have set off every trap. There were at least 12 traps there. Thankfully I managed to lure it to some spiked pits surrounded by beartraps and he fell right in.

They can be damaged by spitter venom though, which is really annoying.

Edit: And yeah, don’t fall down sinkholes. You’ll find plenty of flashlights (like, enough to fill however many rucksacks you’re packing.) and maybe a jackhammer or two, but finding a way back up? Nope. My latest sinkhole expedition ended with about 15 map tiles with no exit in sight. You’d have to take a jackhammer and break into the nearest sewer, but you’d run out of fuel first unless you’re packing a jerrycan or two full.

Please don’t mind if I repeated myself about the board, the SMF logged me out methinks.
How does one cook human flesh?
How do I interact with non-hostile creatures?
Do I need equipment that stuns and confuses humans, such as mace? Not saying ‘riot busters’ cuz, I dunno, if I find anything that resembles a flash grenade I’d sure use it to ditch packs of predators.
And the last one - what should I disassemble in order to get nails? Why can’t I just use an axe and chop some steel?

 1. Can’t until v0.5 release is out and you find a skillbook with the recipe in.
 2. Like what? rabbits? all non-hostiles are a food source. For NPCs, press C to chat with them.
 3. No, you don’t. Smoke and teargas grenades are still very handy for distracting the horde though, as they break LOS and can mess with the scent trail you leave behind.
 4. For nails, go burn down a house. otherwise, S to smash furniture into pieces. If you have a hammer and a screwdriver you can disassemble furniture with the * menu.
