Yes, a pit (different from sinkhole) does not necessary mean another z-level, it acts like a trap that damage you and limit your vision.
Uh… where can I get “circuit boards”?
I find myself seriously lacking these and I’m trying to craft CBMs.
What is up with the shimmering portals that I’ve come across sometimes? I’ve tried entering them multiple times but it doesn’t seem to do anything.
They spit out nether creatures, and they’re radioactive, I think. Eventually they might allow you entrance to the netherworld, when someone gets around to implementing that.
New player here, having a newb question
I wanted a try and learn how to fulfill my char’s basic needs out of the wildlife before getting inside cities and got into reading: Hobo’s Guide, Guide to Nomadic Living and Woodland Survival Guide, which I found very interesting, but I hit a huge problem: I have no clue how to get a knife (cutting/butchering tool) without exploring/going into a city.
The current save I used to try this got a lot of stuff, explored a lot roads, Forest, a Farm, found a bunch of bodies with stuff… but no knife, after a while, I simply stopped caring and left my Shelter to find the damn knife or die trying… and obviously, I died…
Hobo’s Guide is based on that profession, which start with a knife, but I changed it to Bionic Patient because I wanted to try something peculiar (and learn a bit about Bionics).
The other 2 guides doesn’t even cover getting a knife.
I thought glass shiv would work as a tool, but It seems it doesn’t. And even getting a rag, to craft glass shiv, without a knife seems it is a hard task anyways.
I don’t know if I’m missing something, If I’m not, this game seriously need some basic cutting/butchering crafting tools.
EDIT:
Suggestion:
Requiring a knife to make rags out every kind of cloth is a bit excessive; being able to make rags out of light cloth like T shirts, Shorts, underwear with our own bare hands would be nice.
Making cutting/butchering tool more available to help those classes that doesn’t start with one, and support a “Survival” kind of gameplay, making Glass shiv a tool seems like a good idea.

A guess: Grab a screwdriver and 'D’isassemble things like computers and circuit boards. Anything high-tech, really.
There’s a crafting recipe for a “stone knife”, found under Weapons - Piercing.
You need two rocks, a heavy stick/bone/ two by four, and either 6 inches of string, 20 sinew/20 thread/20 plant fibre (kill a small animal for sinew by throwing rocks at it, perhaps).
Or break a window at the emergency shelter for string.

You’d think so, but they don’t seem to drop when I disassemble items. At least, I haven’t noticed it happening. Maybe it’s only SOME items…
The circuit board item seems to be new, anyway. Never used to require those…
You can find both a makeshift knife as well as a stone knife under the WEAPONS/PIERCING category of the crafting menu.
Both recipes are available to all characters regardless of skill.

I guess there’s a bug then, because my Crafting interface is jumping from “Cutting” to “Ranged” (skipping “Piercing”), when I press the arrow keys, and I can’t select it.
I thought it was because I had no Recipes for that category, but now that I think about it, I have no “Ammo → Bullets” or “Food → Bread” recipes but I still can select them.
I’m playing experimental build 0.9-2405-g6975d9f just in case anyone wanna confirm it.
I think the missing Piercing category bug is fixed in the latest experimental.
You are right, it’s fixed in the last experimental version, thanks mochi.
Is there any way to turn my improved hearing bionic off? It’s turning out to be quite problematic sometimes (like when I’m trying to sleep).
For exploring really cold environments is my best bet to just layer a bunch of union suits?

for the first problem, try crafting a “noise canceling gear” and wear it when you sleep.
For the second, i found that the ice lab defeats even the CBM that regulates your temperature combined with 2 fur blankets
so do quick runs to deeper levels, followed by surface defreezing, like we all do
So… what exactly is a Cordless Drill FOR in this game?
It can’t be activated to become a deadly weapon. It can’t be unloaded for batteries. But it has charges, suggesting it does something of use.
Do some crafting recipes or construction tasks require one?
Maybe when disassembling furniture it doesn’t take ages like the screw driver.
Eh, that wouldn’t make a lot of sense though if it’s a drill…
Assembling furniture, on the other hand…
Anyway, can someone explain the new vehicle engine system to me? I don’t think hybrid vehicles used to work, but now it seems they do.
My petrol ran out but the van is still running on my electric engine.
But it seems to be taking damage and giving out a “high pitched whine”. Why is it doing that? Too much weight for just the one electric motor? Should I install more?
I think that might be it?
installing more electric motors is almost always a good idea, if you have the skills to do it.
Looks like that was it. I finally found a “large” electric motor and put that in too. Now the vehicle is great. It has so many batteries it will never run out of power.
Might as well remove the petrol engine and start saving fuel for flamethrowers.
I wish it was possible to switch engines on and off. That way I could have a backup gasoline engine for when my batteries run dry (winter is not kind to electric cars).
Instead I dismount the engine and keep it in the trunk to install when I need it.

or you can just keep the gasoline in the trunks instead in the gas tanks
