I sort of thought this would be neat for starting a new character. But with the books you carry to essentially level up a skill or gain a recipe. Repurpose the books into storage spaces essentially turning them into those ‘fake books’ that hold weapons or other resources, so they don’t take up so much space. Its a gimmick to say the least.

It does not work, because the storage of a book would be bigger than what you want to put in it, so it would be just cumbersome.
