As a side note, once you get to select what materials to use, the game has already worked out if you succeeded or not, which is why you can’t abort at this point.
This can be seen if you fail but don’t use up any materials, then there is no prompt asking you what materials to use, but in both other cases (succeed or fail with material waste) it asks.
