NPCs design: What's their endgame look like?

Basically, I’m wondering what NPC design endgame is going to look like.

Will you be able to make your own towns, countries? Do battle with others? What’s the plan for them, long term?

I’d like to see something like dwarf fortress: you give some orders like “dig pits from here to there” and then some of your followers who can dig start work on it.

I would love to expand the survivor system as well, preferably allowing other “factions” to organize and form defensive structures in existing buildings around town or in the wilderness. The radio hints at such a possibility, but I’ve never run into factions in-game. I am quite new, however.

I ran across a Refuge Camp once, had 2 quests there, one to clear their bay area of people who have turned including their old leader, the other quest was from a Liaison for The Old Guard (AKA Secret Service Pre Cata) to kill some bandits hiding in a cabin (Map showed 3 bandits there), sadly I left and continued exploring before doing any of them and I died, that was a Good World I had, I just hope I can come across another one soon.

I’d like to see the survivor factions fleshed out. Each one with their own base ( like the one thats already in, but for all of them) and random quests given out by their representitives at each base.

I’d like to see this as well, mostly so I could sneak in under the cover of darkness, kill them, and take their stuff.

I so want to remake the Monroe republic, in all of its barbarism

Think it would be interesting where if you are trying to hack a computer console in a science lab it could shoot out something to give you a tracker bionic… for finding the intruder, and perhaphs send robots at the person and if that doesn’t work you may get an npc trying to hire you for some secret service thing…

I wish NPCs and factions got some love, I feel like they’re the most potential for awesome in the game. I understand that AI and stuff is hard as shit to code though. It would be cool to scour the wastes finding living people and recruiting them to the cause, having them set up home in fortified houses reclaimed from the dead and forming an army against competing factions. Yeah.

those npcs that are boarded up into their houses and will try and get you to go away or they will attack…

or those npc huts that are not infested with the dead and have living people in them

It’s chockful of well written out proposals. I may have to take a crack at working on some of them, at the very least the json work for them.

Aenye showed up earlier today. Rough bit of IRL apparently. Hols are gonna slow things up, understandably, but her work’s quite appreciated.

Sex, lots and lots of sex. And children… Maybe. I think a family aspect would be cool though. I really don’t know.

Actually, I got into developing after she’d left, so her return was the first I’d seen of that topic. I’m still going through it, slightly awestruck.

There are several other games available for that sort of thing.

Doesn’t help that when we add new or defend existing content that might possibly have a sexual context (bondage suit, bikini, wolf suit, vibrator all come to mind; for some mysterious reason* the preexisting porn mag and subsequent erotic novel haven’t had these problems), there’s usually quite a bit of forum pushback.
Either of the “ew gross, teh sex, get it out of ‘my’ game that prominently features societal collapse, drug use, mutilation, violence, and (un)death” or the “heh heh I’m a creep and gonna set up camps to impregnate everyone” sort, but usually the former.

So yeah, unlikely. :-/

*May have something to do with 'em being more “mainstream” or “lad-friendly”?

Has the discussion over the NPC-theme, at least on the github discussions, reached any sort of tipping point?

Because any sort of,

  • stumble-upon-a-settlement-recruit-a-disposable-party-member, or
  • employ-a-morale-system-to-have-a-dynamic-capped-party

…would in fact do the trick, for the start. Right?
