Being honest, I prefer the 28 days later zombies over the romero ones any day.
I start out by “I DON’T NEED WEAPONS,BARE HANDS ARE BETTER”
I like to start out by finding the nearest sewing / tailoring kit and making the stuff I’m wearing sturdy af.
I also like to find a relatively good weapon, usually a low level crafted weapon to start before finding an axe or sword of some sort.
If I can get my hands on them, guns are also pretty good. I level up through using a BB gun to not track attention and shoot at any near by zombie you can kite away from a group, and keep shooting at it until he’s either too close or I’m out of ammo.
