Which is better? (Katana Vs. Broadsword)

I’ve been using a broad sword as my main weapon of choice and found a katana among dead gang members. I do notice that the katana has 1 less to hit bonus than broad sword but packs a little extra damage to it. Or does it matter on makes a better flaming weapon?

Katanas do make better flaming weapons because the slowdown on the attack speed is a multiplier.

However the broadsword is better in every other sense.

Broadsword, but do hold onto that katana so you turn it’s blade into a diamond later like I did with mine.

I’d disagree with that. Katana is much better than Broadsword. The damage is about the same, yet the Katana is faster, and unless the mods the broadsword has have changed recently, the Katana is much better. With its rapid strike you’ll get two attacks in the same time as one broadsword attack. Also if you don’t get the rapid attack mod, you’ll probably get the critical strike mod meaning double damage in the same attack time again.
Edit: Sorry was thinking about Diamond Katana’s mods. Katana doesnt have precise. Just quick and block2 vs broadswords block1. Better off with the Katana, more damage in the same time, and better defensive abilities.

Really, you can upgrade your katana into a diamond one? I thought diamond katanas had to be found legitimately; is diaomond one found legitimately, needs to be made, or both?

If I could actually upgrade the katana to a diamond one then Katana MAY be better. I guess the defualt katana may even be a bit better than the broad since it does more damage.

Katanas are twice as good as broadswords because of Rapid Strike. Latest experimental reduces that though.

The whole “rapid strike” thing does not seem to be represented in the description. Looking at the posted descriptions, I would say that the accuracy boost and faster attack speed of the broadsword would make it preferable to the less consistent katana. Is there any way for one to determine that the katana is vastly superior without extensive testing or exploring the game’s datafiles?

It’s only rare labs that have a CVD machine. Most have something else.

Are you on the Stable or the Experimental? I know the experimental builds display the techniques a weapon has in its description. (Always play the experimental)

If you’re on Stable then Katana >> Broadsword, and you can’t have a diamond one.

Broadsword is better in my opinion due to being more multi-purpose than the katana. I can smash things a lot easier, saving me the time it takes to swap out my sword with a hammer or something just so I can break down a door or smash a window. Due to the type of character I typically play, I can’t afford to waste time or space so the broadsword is generally a better pick over a katana.

I can agree with this. When I use my broad sword it makes a good item smasher.

So basically so far the broadsword I can imagine is a bit more bulky giving it easier bash to items and constructions but is straight with a sharp point (broadsword has piercing as well). Katana is a skinny, slicy, bendy blade being light and easier to use so I imagine the katana will be much quicker to use in game and with more cutting damage but does this apply to the stable version of 0.A?

EDIT: Sorry broad sword has no pierce but has bash of 8, how silly of me

The techniques are pretty huge in combat, so katana is better if you have decent skill, but with either sword and decent melee skill you will be sitting pretty, anyways.

Katana all day every day yes katana mmm katana I love the katana mmm not even using grammar to show the katana love.

I basically have a spasm of delight if I find the katana due to its rapid strike ability, high parry rate, low storage space to store in a backpack (if lacking a sheath) and brilliant cutting damage relative to its speed. The broadsword I find is brilliant also, but it lacks the 1 vs 1 potential of the katana and sometimes I can find the knock back strike annoying and un-needed. The broadsword is also a lot heavier and a pain to carry so I usually end up crafting it into a blade.

But I love the katana on cataclysm more than any melee weapon without a doubt. It is love. It is life.
