Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!

You asked earlier about seeds- I once found some marijuana seeds in some building, though it might have been off a zombie.

I got mine from dead drug dealers, I think. Anyway this is really annoying me now… I have everything I need to make a Gants Rustung siege crossbow…

except the foot crank. Can’t find one. I could make one, but I can’t find a steel chain either.

Update: FOUND ONE.

I wandered north out of town on a really stupidly long road, killed a web spider with a sword and then randomly found a foot crank in the road. Huh.

Now I’ve found that the range on the crossbow is far shorter than the description (+30 range) makes it sound, and also I keep missing. wtf…? Do I just need higher archery skill?

i think the Gantz rustung is terrible for shooting nearby things. It only shines from longer range

It won’t shoot at long range.

The range seems shorter than the longbow. Definitely seems shorter than a rifle.

And yet in game it says it has +30 range.

Uhhhh… WHAT?

I mean OK the range it fires at isn’t unreasonable, but it basically misses at max range and then if I try to reload a zombie eats my face.

I also cannot seem to hit Deer with anything at all… let alone this thing.

Okay, again, why on Earth did you think a siege weapon to hit zombies was a good idea.

For info, a Ganz Rustung look kinda like this:

Because they are relatively slowly moving targets and a standard crossbow doesn’t do a lot of damage. Also it claims to have huge range and damage bonuses.

And when a weapon is that difficult to craft you expect it to be useful.

Just what in hell is it good for?

Rule of cool mostly. Just like taking a M249 and going full Rambo is a waste of ammo and not very effective (at least until you can mount it on bipods), the Ganz Rustung is there for being cool.

Although IMO we should have special bolts for it, which do much more damage and range.

The problem I’m having isn’t damage or range… I mean the range isn’t as great as it could be…

But I just can’t hit anything with it. Is there some secret to it that I’m missing? Do I just need a way higher archery skill?

It got a piss poor dispersion, like 30 or so. To compare, a normal crossbow got 18.

FYI, this siege crossbow AKA Ganz Rustung is very heavy. Of course you will have insane dispersion with it.
And thus we should make dispersion strength-dependant.

Or make it mountable.

After doing some !!SCIENCE!! to the Ganz I have concluded that it is utter rubbish. While steel bolts fired from it can do insane amount of damage, a leve 14 archer will hit only about 1 in 10 and most shots will only do 30-50 damage.
It seems that better results are obtained when you aim a little behind your target, but you’ll still miss a lot.

Conclusion, you are better using a normal bow or a pneumatic bolt driver (that thing is awesome)

Someone just liek meeeeee

If you really like shooting arrows, then you’d better just stick with the ref-rec bow. At level 12 I killed Jabberwock with 6 arrows.
Crossbows are for sissies.

Is the repeater crossbow any good?

Eh, it can hold 10 bolts and has a burst mode. I’ve rarely used it due to my lazy self not going out to pick up the stuff for it.

Just realised I had the materials so I built one.

Damage isn’t great but I just killed a wolf spider in 3 bursts. I think every single bolt hit.

Which is odd since the dispersion rate isn’t great. What exactly does that number do?

The dispersion is, in quarter-degree, the contribution of the gun to your inaccuracy? The bigger it is, the more your shots will stray.

Hm, it was good vs that spider but I don’t think I even hit the cougar I tried shooting next…

Never ever attach suppressor to your nail rifle.
Mostly because you will posess weak but TOTALLY silent gun.

No shooting sound at all. Literally. But also weak as shit, but… you know, silence. Ninja style.
