Ok… I hear all this stuff about archery being overpowered, but when I tried making an archer character, I got horribly murdered each time. What the hell am I doing wrong?
I usually go for high strength, 4 skill in archery, 2 in dodge… I forget what traits I picked.
It gets much better at higher levels allowing you to crit and head shot sometimes together, but even then it should not be any better than using a medium calibre rifle. The overpowered sentiments might be from the issue of an endless amount of ammo and sound. This often leads to users of bows not hesitating to kill most zombies they come across whereas an ammo scrounging dependant character might be more cautious in whether or not to engage at all. This often leads to archery characters being far more levelled as a result.
I think something helps archery too, is if you get high level in it (and another trait, not gonna say), you can make metal arrows which seem to hold up way better and kill most basic things in one hit (the zombies and wild animals).
I haven’t tried the reflex recurve bow, as although it has higher damage, I read it crashes the game if you melee. (I’m running I think the oldest stable of 6, if it’s been updated).
Archery is great against most enemies (not mobs), and even works with when both of your arms are broken. You can’t use guns if your arms are broken, are out of bullets, or need to reload.
Well, the other skill will level up if you plan to go travelling, is the most hint I will tell you. Wood arrows are plenty fine for normal enemies, you can make heavy wood arrows, fletching, and arrowheads when your archery and survival go up.
Also if you’re having too much trouble, try turning down or off skill rust. I’m playing with it off because I’ve had bad experiences with it on, but skill rust to last level probably works fine now.
A lot of the games fun is in discovering things. It’s one thing to say there’s CBMs in a lab, it’s another to give someone a map of all the rooms and tell them the monsters and what the computers do and all that.
If you kill guys with enough rocks or arrows, and have reasonable access to trees, water, and woodland creatures, then that’s all you really need to survive; the rest is waiting to be discovered through play.
Ok. If I wanted to discover this during play, I wouldn’t ask about it here. =P
I’m only asking because I want to get better at this particular style of playing. I don’t want to “discover it”. I’m frustrated with it and would like a little more than some cryptic “hints”.
Fine, mechanic then to get mechanic up easily, if you find a hacksaw and wrench I think it goes up when you dismantle cars. It takes a lot of time so be prepared with food and water, but otherwise, working on cars is a ridiculously easy way to get mechanic up. Welding takes batteries, but if you can get the ball rolling, lots of guys or houses have flashlights, and if the car actually works you can cover a lot of ground and run over a lot of zombies.
On another note, although pain lowers speed below zombie speed almost immediately, even caffeinated drinks will bring it above if you want to run away and rest. Always close all doors and windows if you don’t want zombies or critters coming in.

Uh, if you can use a bow (or a crossbow, for that matter) with both arms broken…that seems like a Bug, not a Benefit.
this is too long for new people to get a hold of. some of the better players (non-coders cause they are busy). should write up separate guides and make a thread for their own. get them stickied and then copied to the wiki.
Well I am currently going through the NPC quest for the nether creatures and have gotten to the “hunt for the cult site” I assume it is in the prison but I don’t know what type of gear I should have, midgame gear? late game gear? any tips?
Bring guns and ammo, armor repair kit and some medicine/drugs. let’s say these things can kill you easily in melee if something wrong happens or your not in mid game tier.
