Tips, Tricks, and Newb Questions!

Alright, this may or may not be something worth noting in a bug report, but, it’s got me frustrated beyond belief.

Sometimes, I just DIE. It’s happened twice now, both times when I had a really good character going.
The first time may be excusable somehow, as I had influenza, but I doubt it. I was taking medicine for it, my health was fine, I was fully hydrated, I wasn’t hungry; everything was actually going pretty great, other than my motorcycle breaking down. So, I went to sleep in my forest-edge tent, on my cot inside, and as soon as I did, Game Over! I died. I received no notification of how I died, nor did I have any suspicions of how. It frustrated the hell out of me.

This last time, which was fairly recently, I also had a great character going. It was only in the middle of my first night, and I was trying to figure out what was causing me 35 pain on my way to the house I was staying in, to get some shut-eye. My limbs were in mostly perfect shape, and I figured my codeine must’ve warn off from my last scuffle, but, I had no indication of any life-threatening damage. I tried to use a first-aid kit on my head region, and as soon as I did, Game Over!

I honestly can’t think of any reason why I’ve died both these times, and it’s more frustrating than I can describe. It’s especially discouraging from playing the game, as, no matter how careful I am, or how survivable my character is, I run the risk of just DYING at random simply by playing, thus removing any incentive to really play at all; at least, for me, anyway. If anyone else is having this issue, I’d like to know. Maybe there was cause for both deaths, maybe it’s a glitch, but I’d like to know either way.

That second case almost sounds like a nasty infected wound, or bleeding, or smoke inhalation, or something. Did you check the character screen ("@")? And were ANY of your body parts in the red (apparently, the head may have been)?

Overall, I agree that death messages could use some more detail.

I’m positive I had no infected wounds, I wasn’t bleeding, and hadn’t encountered any smoke within hours (game hours) of death. My head was in almost perfect condition, but I was curious as to what was causing my pain, so I used some first-aid on it, just to be on the safe side. I’m particularly observant to messages, especially when my character is going good.
I honestly can’t see any possible reason whatsoever for the last death.

Can you die of radiation poisoning without showing effects before it?

I don’t imagine that being very likely. I wasn’t near anything that would irradiate me, either, I don’t think. I’m pretty sure that you’d feel some sort of pain, or at least throw up a few times if you had radiation poisoning.

Actually no, radiation is called the ‘silent killer’ for a reason. At low levels you might get achy joints and lose hair like a chemo patient, and a rash like sunburn. You DID have pain just before you died, as well. I think one of the first aid critical failures is that you hurt yourself more, so perhaps that’s what happened due to your pain-debuffed state. Still, it would be nice to know exactly what killed you so that you didn’t have this question afterwards. It’s pretty obvious if you get a game over while standing knee deep in zombies what killed you, but some of the effects are less obvious.

Craters are fucking radioactive.

No srsly, at some places it’s at 9 ground radiation (Geiger Counter tested) which gets you to 100 (instadeath) level rads in 12 turns, but you die later. Which is a real fucker.

At that level all you can do is take iodine like candy and pray.

Irl radiation is terrible: (in ascending order): Nausia, hair loss, hemmoraging (internal bleeding from the brain), bone density loss (spontaneous bone explosion, no really it shatters inside you), and painful rash.

Fucking shit, Wikipedia. I need to know this. Why you crash?

Hey, I’ve been playing this game for a few weeks now and the farthest I ever got is 2 days. Somebody should write up a guide of some sort to help out me and other newbies. It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Read this entire thread, page first to last.

It’s kind of exactly what you’re looking for. Lots of helpful tips in here.

I wrote up a guide.

Started a new game, went into town got some supplies, started organizing stuff in the basement and a flaming eye came right through the rock wall.

Is this normal? I know there was a portal close by in town, but are these two related?

  • (s)mashing small trees usually gives you several heavy sticks. The trees become a bush that you can forage for food.

Reko, the following: I died 4~5 times this way. Once I got hit by jumping a window, twice by get hitting by a Z (I remember one of it I was at full health, no infection, anything), and twice by simply sleeping. I really have no idea why I died. I even posted at Bugs section, but with no effect.

That’s a Shift+Q Shift+Y job right there.

Ran into a gracken myself in the subway station… it followed me out tracking. Not sure what the hell one is, but…

Well, we all know what happens when stuff tracks you. fortunately it seems even eldritch abominations aren’t impervious to a good old-fashioned nailgun.

Also DeepBlue, watch where you sleep. Make sure it’s safe first. It might be cold, starvation, infection etc. I’m pretty sure the devs included some kind of sneaky sleep-killing monster.

No signal of cold (I woke up 3 times before sleeping), I was on a barricaded house (I cleaned around it), and got no bite or infection. Also, no starvation/thirsty. The weird part is not dying only when sleeping, but also get killed simply by a Z it with full health.

wow, that does suck :x Well, they did say the current release is a bit buggy, although personally I’ve not run into anything like that yet (except rotting orange juice.)

Other options are lightning strikes setting fire to your hideout and burning to death.

Trying to build a super car here. can some 1 list the engines in order from least power to highest?

also whats the easiest way to fill up cbm power meter? it gets really boring choping down houses and eating 2 x 4’s for only 3 power.

Bigger numbers, better engine. V8, large electric motor and plasma engines are the various top-of-the line stuff.

Getting the ethanol burner should get you good and drunk (and powered up).
