Gobsmacked

Other general advice for other folks who are struggling with the game (From a person who is still learning the ropes), I was told this a while back on the Cata IRC: There’s no shame in cheating the worldgen a little bit just to make life easier. The following steps I personally take to ensure I can survive more than one day are:

  1. Turn the spawn rate down to 0.5 (This one was already mentioned in the thread)
  2. Bump up my starting skill points a fair bit (I personally like bumping them up to round about 24 or 25, both because that was the maximum for a while, and also because it allows me to bump most of my stats up a little bit and pick a smattering of handy skills and traits, without going completely overpowered - I pick a couple of negative traits too, but that’s more for flavour than min-maxing!)
  3. Disable Skill Rust completely from the options. Skill Rust is just a nuisance, from personal experience - Losing points in First Aid just because I don’t actually need to use First Aid right then and there is kinda crappy, so I just do away with it altogether. You may opt for the alternative of skill rust having a cap based on your intelligence level, if you still like the challenge of it!

These are just my personal settings based on suggestions by folks on the IRC way back, they’ve served me well (Though my first run on the recent versions had me getting straight-up ganked by a moose, so I may need to reconsider my options)

I don’t think you should turn down spawns or get more trait points, that ruins the challenge! (Though challenge for some people is frustration for others so I can understand why someone would want a easier time.)

I do however, think you should definitely get rid of skill rust, it’s pretty bothersome.
