No, I just assumed that the gas ovens would still work. I mean, the electric grid going down wouldn’t affect those, since the gas isn’t pumped by electricity. My mistake - thanks!
Another question. So, I went into a survival shelter. No zombies about. I waited for 8 hours using the wait command. No zombies about, no noise. Not near a door. I go to sleep - I hear zombies banging at the windows. Use debug to kill them off. No zombies. I wait. No zombies. I go to sleep - I hear zombies banging at the windows. I turn on the smellmap. No signs of smell, or at least, anything I identify as smell.
Whats going on? I’m not making noise and they can’t see me. The windows are all boarded up.
Dunno. Perhaps zombies need a hug, perhaps it’s some built in “Whales” artefact of forcing the player to move his ass out into the world and adventure.
Personally, I’ve never spent substantial time in a survival shelter (no bed, and when I had “mobile” sleep-kit or skills to build bed, shelters were the least attractive place to hunker down).
Well, semi-trucks… at least. I haven’t yet had a chance to get acquainted with post 0.7.1 additions,
but then again I played original Cata: without cars, with limited view and zombies popping out of no-where just exactly in front of you on the least of sounds, even after one thought one “cleaned” the city “clean” (the cwazy good ole times
The best part about vehicles (even the lowly bicycle) is that one isn’t forced to defend this one and only place to death…
trying to sleep in a windowed car in a city is of course a silly idea, sorry,

So if you want to build a fire, is it better to cut trees into logs, or planks? I seem to remember that fire is really, really odd about this, so don’t want to waste my trees on something that’s going to be bad. Erring on the side of planks, since I seem to remember fire burns all items at an equal rate, but I’m not completely sure…
At some point during the wait your character must have farted extremely loudly and/or stinky-ly, bringing in the zombies. And the smell is so bad that humans can’t even smell it.
hahaha you dont turn on the ovens. you just put wood in them and light it up. make sure you pop a window first. ovens stop the fire from spreading and subsequently burning the place down.
I want to read a mechanics book until I learn the ‘bear trap’ recipe, so I can start making bear traps. But I read the book until I don’t learn a recipe, and then have to keep hitting the same buttons over and over again. Is there a ‘read until successful’ command?
Also: I’m wearing a full set of (heavy) clothing, and a blanket. If I sleep on -anything- other then a bed, I end up ‘very cold’. It seems silly that I can be overheating and then magically get cold because I sleep. Yes, to some extent, people want blankets when they sleep - but I have slept on the floor with just blankets before IRL. I’ve slept on the floor WITHOUT blankets before. Heck, I have been temporarily homeless and slept in my car wearing/with less then my in-game character has right now. Its been awhile, but I mean…its true. Humans do not, specifically, need a bed or a bedroll to sleep.
It seems silly that the game enforces ‘sleeping on a bed/bedlike item’ rather then ‘being warm’. I mean, I’m -overheating- before I sleep …why should I magically freeze when sleeping?
hmmm i will try various sleeping arrangements and see whats up.
i dont think you can “read until successful at learning a recipe.” im not sure what mechanic governs learning recipes form a book, whether it is filling a meter or by random chance (i would hope the former is the case) but i think it would probably take a pretty long time regardless
Unless you want to burn your shelter down, I do not suggest doing this with one of the “ovens” that you find in houses. “Wood Stoves” that you construct yourself work like this, Ovens do not as far as I know.
I died. By accident. Is there a way to get my save back? Usually the answer to this is ‘no’. I didn’t savescum. I was doing something wierd to experiment, and assumed I’d have at least a turn before I died, because I wanted to see what would happen - and I didn’t. I tried closing the program before it could save…but apparently I was too late.

You have to backup your save file before, the save file will be erased at the moment your character died.
(according to what I knew about rougelike games, not 100% sure of course)
You can get back your stuff by starting a new char and trying to get to where you died. If you had CBM’s inside, you can even get those back, with high enough survival of course by butchering ‘yourself’.
Negative aspect about: You might be starting FAR FAR away. Or, you get lucky like me and start 2 maptiles away.
