Guys, I’d like to make two separate points.

Why would the defense situation have to be a game mode change? Just put in some trigger that makes lots of zombies start to spawn out of sight around you. Maybe it’s something you initiate late game, say by using an item or constructing something. There should be some logical reason to do it, too, not just ‘zombie attractor’, but something good, like a long-distance radio beacon or maybe it occurs when you start constructing an aircraft or some such.

When thinking up late game content, we really should be mindful of the intriguing work that’s already been done in the direction of late game stuff. There seems to be some plot taking form in the late game as it is. I think the game actually selects a late game quest at world creation. Check it out:
One time I played the mine had an Amigara fault. The temple was vegetation-themed (I died before learning more).
Another time I played, a certain item was required to enter the temple. I went to the mine and found a strange item on a pedestal. I suspect that was the item needed to enter the temple, but I died before finding out more. In that world, all the temples required the item to enter. None of the temples were of the type I had encountered before.
Both of those times, no hospitals could be found anywhere. One other time I played, there was a hospital, and the NPC gave a quest to collect zombie blood in a vacutainer and take it to the nearby hospital for analysis.
In summary, it seems there are at least three separate late game scenarios, for which at least initial coding and writing has been done. There may be more possibilities. I would really like to see these existing scenarios expanded, extended, and integrated into the storyline more.
