# Where to get fuel for steam engines?

So I just was lucky enough to find a steam engine in somebody’s garage, but it turns out it may not be so lucky. Where can I find coal to fuel this thing? can it run on charcoal?
I don’t have the mining mod installed so where should I look for coal?

Charcoal works but isn’t very efficient, you can still mine for coal though even without the mining mod. I can’t speak to the effectiveness when it comes to vehicles but I had a base mostly run off a steam engine, a generator and coal and it worked quite well.

yeah I figured as much. It’ll certainly work much better until I can research biofuel or UPS
