IIRC, right now the game only has the anti-personel kind of mine, an anti-tank mine that can only be triggered by a heavy enough vehicle would be neat.

While I can’t see throwing something at a mine to detonate it working 100% of the time… Why not shooting it?

Because a landmine is designed to be hard to disable. They use explosives that won’t get set of by impact like that, and are equiped with a trigger that is made to only go off when a person, not a small animal or a large vehicle, is over them.

No. Mine Clearing charges, such as long ropes of C4 are commonly used to clear minefields. These are really big bangs. (Here’s a good example of one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPksH_CRHnI) As a result there are antipersonnel charges designed to foil that as well. To properly destroy a mine you’d need to take the time to set up a proper disposal charge. You might be able to dislodge it or toss it out of the way though with a big bang, which is what happens a lot with mine clearing charges.

That wouldn’t work, anti personnel mines are made to avoid things like that, much in the way they’re now being made to avoid mine clearing explosives. A shopping cart isn’t a human foot.

No, tank mines would be cheap as hell. You’re just driving along some stretch of road and suddenly boom, game over.

I was under the impression that vehicles with wide wheels wouldn’t set off mines period. But that might just be because I haven’t driven over many minefields. It would be nice to have a more modular trap crafting system, so you could (a)pply any trigger to any kind of triggerable item (shotgun, crossbow, grenade, c-4, mininuke…) to make it into a makeshift mine.

Pushing a sort of shopping cart finagled construction through the field would ‘likely’ work I’ve determined from looking at the designs for most mines, an Afghani fellow even designed a sort of 'disposable mine clearing tumble weed.'

Throwing rocks at it however, likely wouldn’t help much unless it was some old WWII design (S-Mine/Bouncing Bettys or the whacky Russian Wooden Mines.) I even saw a listing of some odd Italian mine that uses a ‘slow pressure locking fuse’ to avoid detonation by sudden shocks like line-charges so just blowing them away might not always work.

Just wait till someone adds the GPS-enabled, leaping, self-healing minefields that can summon autonimous backup.

That device you’ve pictured isn’t at all effective at clearing mines. It can roll right over a mine easily, and is unreliable. There’s a lot of newer mines that only go off when they are stepped on with a steadily increasing pressure. Given that this takes place in the future it wouldn’t be a stretch for better triggers to be standard.

You’d probably see the trigger first, but from my understanding of how the mines work, it’s based on something of the weight of an average man putting pressure onto the trigger. So maybe crawling would work? Ask the Italians, they’re the ones who seem to have the fanciest triggers these days.

I assume that not everyone is born perceptive enough to notice buried-freaking-land-mines.

You can’t disarm what you can’t see!
They can be powered by batteries if you want. Maybe found in a military surplus? I doubt craftable… then again…

Also, has any1 tried that makeshift land mine blower upper made of shopping carts?
I’m eager to hear results.
