Throwing martial arts

Yeah, realism to fantasy balance is the whole of the debate, but I’ve come to believe that deadly throwing is significantly harder to learn than most others. Think it should be treated as a martial art.

Primitive Rock Sling: A worthless survival weapon?

For sake of argument, ignore that he’s using a sling. Notice his form and how he throws sticks. This is a model for the average person who feels like they’ve practiced throwing. Unskilled. I think he’s skill capped, and has reached his highest potential, until he’s trained by someone else. In CDDA, that someone else would have to be a book or NPC.

This seems to be the core of victors arguement. This guy is not throwing 0 he is throwing -1 maybe -2. throwing is not hard, if you are in any fashion comfortable with your own body. This guy is clearly not.

Excessive concern for real world detail. Point is to provide a way to include the fact that when martial artists practice throwing they do it as part of their martial art, whether or not its consistent in formal presentation in literature.

That’s nonsense. When a taekwondo practitioner throws a baseball he doesn’t do it in a taekwondo manner. There are certain throwing weapons that are best thrown in specific manner, but that can be modelled with throwing skill, it doesn’t pertain in any way to martial arts.

Yeah, that’s why you practice a bit. It isn’t a martial art though, you don’t need specialised training.

Go outside, pick up a rock, throw it at something (not living or fragile.) See how easy it is to forcibly accelerate something in a specific direction?

Point is, unless your arms are broken you can throw things. If you can throw things you can practice throwing. If you can practice something you can get good at it.

Hey anyone can punch a thing. Punching a thing so they fall down, or blocking a thing trying to punch you so it falls down, that’s some pretty hard shit. Takes a lot of practice.

people have taught me to shoot a basketball, no one has ever taught me to throw a rock or a ball. I have seen others throw things and that was plenty to teach me. From there, better throwing can be learned with simple practice. Can tips and pointers accelerate that learning? Yes. But it is not MANDITORY.

no. Martial arts can be learned intuitively, that is simulated by brawling martial art. Its not refined, but its there.

Yes? Point is, martial arts is complicated. You could also say “We don’t need an electronics skill, just pick up a capacitor and make a laser rifle!”

Throwing isn’t complicated. You throw something and it hits the thing you were aiming at or it doesn’t.

So you’re an MLB all-star in waiting, and that inherently makes you great at sticking a throwing knife.

He never said he could throw them well, just that he could. And if you can do something you can practice it. I’m sure most people, given enough time, could work out how to throw a knife so it embeds rather than clubbing things.
