Sorry to respond to an old post but I was reading this thread and came upon Arek_PL’s 3rd post on the first page. Googled “saphrofagus” and it turns out nobody else in the world has misspelled sarcophagus that badly.

Imagine a sarcophagus coming alive and becoming a saprophage.

The Polski dude doesn’t have bad grammar but bad spelling, this is weird since it should get underlined as wrong by your browser.

Unless he’s using another language locale/software and doesn’t have dictionary support for English.
Switch to English bro, it’s the lingua franca of the internet.

I’d have to agree that basements are the way forwards, amplified circuits give off enough light to read and craft, are relatively simple to craft and allow a starting character some respite from the world above courtesy of the reality bubble. Doesn’t stop NPC’s spawning in and stealing your stuff. Put your things in crates.

As for Zombears, trap all entrances, windows both outside and inside, they’ll be injured and slow and easily dispatched even for a weak character.

Not if said weak character is asleep.
Another noob’s tip, never EVER, no matter how sleep-deprived you are, wear noise-cancelling headgear in a base no matter how “safe” it is.
Oh, and how effective are caffeine pills for extended use?

my trusty katana/broadsword is quite adequate to defend the base from zombears and similar critters.
definitely sleeping without ear plugs, and if weak i prefer basements (making sure they are safe before sleeping in them)

If can I get to it I always go to a fire station. Once you murder the previous occupants congratulations you know have a zombie proof above ground retreat. I guess maybe a a hulk could bust through the walls or gates not sure never had it happen.
I have had some pretty successful starts just rushing to a fire station, running in circles throwing rocks at the firefighter zombies inside and than going through the awesome starter loot inside. Armor, usually a Haligan bar or crowbar, and some nice medical books to sift through until night when I can raid surrounding houses.

I’ve never looked at a fire station closely, even for loot; they always seemed to take a lot more than I get from looting. Though I might just check one out; I’ve always wanted a Halligan bar.

Are Halligan Bars actually worthwhile? They seem to just be heavier crowbars with no statistical bonuses to them. It feels like they should be able to do more. Is there something about them I am missing?

afaik they are just heavier crowbars… (i can’t remember if they have better combat stats though)

Reinforced, the Halligan bar is rocking bash: 22, cut:5, hit bonus of +2. Takes a 145 moves per attack though so slow. Also in techniques it has Brutal strike and wide strike although not sure how either works I can say from experience when three zombies have you surrounded and strike one but TWO go down, it’s a pretty fantastic feeling.
Mid to late game I just carry a crowbar because the Halligan bar is pretty heavy, takes up to much volume etc. but in early game when it is a choice of pipe hit with a rock until it resembles a crude crowbar or this bad ass crowbar/hammer looking thing I usually stray on the side of bad ass.

They’re just an option and inferior to crowbar for opening things, and to a proper melee weapon (i.e. a quarterstaff) in damage.
