# Packaging - Update (2016-11-02)

Good day, ladies and gentlemen!

To be honest, I’m a bit of a hoarder. I collect a lot of stuff which (for my playstyle) often leads to some problems/inconveniences:

- Many items result in a lack of inventory space.
- Having -a lot- of items around your character seems to make problems with the crafting system, which can’t find all items, even if they are within reach!
- Another point, which let to this mod, was the lack of bundling larger quantities of the some item type.

So I designed this mod, which introduces a “medium sized” -whatever this means- cardboard box (reduces a number of items with overall 15-16 units of volume to 12) and a makeshift storage box (reduces 65-68 units of volume to 50). This two items can be filled via recipe with a lot of itemtypes. As every itemtype requires it’s own recipe, and I already included 303 recipes (236 for the cardboard box, 67 for the storage box), I didn’t make recipes for mixed box fillings. Unpacking is done via deconstruction of the filled item. Currently included are this recipes for filling the makeshift storage box…:

All recipes occure under “Others” -\> “Others”.

This mod should be balanced, as the reduction in volume comes at the cost of increased weight. The cardboard box weighs 400g, the storage box 2000g.  
Both boxes are folded if empty, in which case they require 4 (cardb. b.) resp. 17 (stor. b.) units of volume instead of 12 (cardb. b.) resp. 50 (stor. b.) units.

There’s a really, really rare chance of filled cardboard boxes spawning as loot. Also included is a warehouse variation, that has a rare chance to spawn as replacement for the already integrated warehouse, and may include one or two filled cardboard boxes.

Do you have to dissasemble the filled box back to craft something from that item? Because that doesn’t sound very convenient. Or are they coded like food items in boxes and bottles?

You should add syrofoam. For homemade napalm purposes.

Also awesome. I wish we had more uses for boxes, and more reason to want to reload dry goods.

nop. not. nein.

need filing boxes with items - not recipes. recipes not need.  
need mod which add ®eload funcion to boxes(or same type containers) or bottles (germetic containers) with function of Reload and user must select from list which item he want to stack into that container. after cardboard box will be, as example - "cardboard box with 100 of 5.56 NATO"  
not recipes.

somehow floor or grain is filled into cardboard box, right?  
and tin can of meat soup…

Not quite. There once was a mod which enabled the player to fill boxes, backpacks and other containers with different kind of things. you had to use the advanced inventory to fill and empty those containers, but it worked amazingly well in my opinion (for example, you could pack a dozen aspirin, bandages, morphine and a ton of other stuff into a bag of some description, and you could always take something out of it and use it.)  
Basically, most clothing and some containers like canvas bags and so on had a volume you could fill up - Clothing had additional normal inventory space, which was explained as ‘quick to access storage’ like loops on your belt or small, easy to open pockets.  
I know this mod changed something in the Code of the game itself, but most people who used it also liked it a lot.  
Needless to say, Kevin (and possibly some other modders?) rejected the Idea of implementing this or a similar system into the game, with the justification that the inventory system is already a mess and they don’t want to improve and build upon the existing system, but creating a whole new, ‘better’ system.  
From what I know, the modder stopped updating the mod sometime before 0.B think, and never came back. And every time someone asks for fillable Containers Kevin answers they’re free to make a new Inventory system which supports this, in an easy and manageable way.  
Lets be honest here, I’d also love the Idea of fillable containers. I yearn for the day where my Survivor can grab a plastic box of some description and put his flour in it, or stack a dozen MRE’s in it. Or even better, small cardboard boxes for ammunition, you could fill a box with 30 or 40 rounds and have it easily accessable in one of your pockets. Sigh…

As I said, the mod is hilariously outdated and he modmaker actually changed the code itself and compiled it’s own version of cataclysm to download.  
However, just for you, i looked for it and found it \<3

It’s called CataTweaks and is nearly 2 years old by now. I also downloaded the compiled version, just to check the version number ; It’s a 0.B version, and he did try to update to the latest experimentals all the time, but…yah.  
I really loved this mod, it was so…useful, i always had a small bag on me with all the medical supplies, one bag with cooking utensils and some food…oh well. Have fun looking at it.
