# Draw Your Cataclysms

Cool drawing man, and yeah pencil sharpening is really an issue, that’s why I switched to a mechanical one with a 0.3 lead. Only problem is that it breaks If I put too much pressure and that it takes AGES to shade stuff and when I try that it ends up half assed because the lead is too bright.  
Also what gun is that?

Thanks, and it’s a 12g pipe pistol with a bayonet attached. I like to think that the bayonet is improvised from ice skates, hence the shape. And I do know that pipe guns use 2x4 in their crafting, but they look CATACLYSMIER with a duct-tape-wrapped handle.

I think I got a mechanical pencil somewhere, but I’ve never learned how to use them, heh. Not as in “I never learned how to draw with them”. I never learned how to lock the damn lead in place, it keeps sliding back inside the pen.

Here i use a mechanical one (a Shaker, if you know what they are. They are simply the best.) of 0.5. If possible, 0.5 B.  
I think mechanical pencils shade way better than normal ones (or i don’t use normal ones very well) but if i want to add thick edges i use a 4 B that i have. or 2 B.

Agreed, Shakers are great for arting. Just make sure to go gentle on the paper.

I do not like how brittle mechanical pencils are, nor their inability to shade wider areas. I like to use this:

They are expensive. Expensive is bad. Upsides are: the thick lead is the same as a traditional pencil, so you can do shading with the broad-side or detail work with the pencil tip both. The lead rarely if ever breaks. The little metal cap on the back has no eraser inside, but the little hole in the end of it does sharpen your lead for you. I bought a pack of HB, 2H, and 4H leads for mine years ago and still have yet to get through all of them.

They are my favourite.

My other favourite is a traditional 4H pencil and an HB for darker details. 4H’s are horrible. Great if you want to do draft work that you can later draw over, because the lead is so hard it leaves only light marks. Great if you want your line weight to not vary much, again because the lead’s hardness leaves it with a very pale range to shade with. Bad if you don’t want to risk cutting thinner paper by drawing too hard. Bad because once dug-in, 4H is hard to erase.  
I love 4H anyway. It does not smudge. Smudging makes me rage. Anything less than an HB gets all over my hands and my work. I am a fuss.

Draw something they said. So I did.

Then I went and forgot to make it blatantly obvious it was related to Cataclysm… I was gonna put a fungal spire in the background… …but it looked wrong, removed it. Oh well, I tried.

I can clearly see it’s cata (or at least rogue like inspired) by looking at the “@” tie clip on your character’s tie so it’s fine. Either way, good work

AND OF COURSE IT’S RAINING. Aw man poor Ekarus does not look pleased about this situation. I would have a survivor edmund hold up an umbrella or something, but I get the feeling I’m vastly shorter than you. XD

Ekraus is one turn from taking a 40mm grenade launcher burst to the face from a tank-bot. I was gonna draw the “durring” but I didn’t feel like trying to draw that.

I really want to get a drawing tablet for use with my laptop so I can learn to do cool digital art (though I’m not sure my current skills are worthy of digital art) instead of sketching things and scanning them on my crappy printer.

Do any of you artsy people have recommendations for good (and cheap) tablets?

Wacom intuos is the way to go

I bought a cheap knock-off on Amazon for 40 bucks. It’s got all the problems of a Wacomb but none of the advantages! 😃

still, with how little I draw anymore $40 isn’t too expensive.

the PTH model is the one I use too. The resemblance to my username is not why I vouch for it however…

It really is a good size and handles nicely! Just be sure if you DO get either of those, when you check that little spare nib compartment: The spare nibs included with the device are actually snapped onto the back of the compartment lid, not loose inside of it. That inside-space just has the little nib-remover hole.

Took me a month to find my spare nibs.
