What is the CVD machine sed for in current dev? Because is seems like the recipes that used it in Lab-journal-Gustav were removed at some point. Is there something else it is used for, or is is useless at the moment?

Gustav no longer contains any recipes at all, last I checked.

I’ve never used the machine, but I found this [https://github.com/CleverRaven/Cataclysm-DDA/pull/18627](https://github.com/CleverRaven/Cataclysm-DDA/pull/18627)

As far as I can tell you should be able to just use the thing? Although I remember finding one and not knowing how to use it at all. It’s still used for coating weapons, I think.

The Gustav journal is now just a hint/fabrication book. To use the CVD machine just walk up to the console and examine it. It still costs hydrogen and charcoal to use, but you can coat any item with a cutting values above a certain number (6 I think) so there’s the possibility of diamond throwing knives, axes, etc. You can even diamond coat sword bayonets. Or put a sword bayonet on a gun and coat the gun for maximum flashiness.

Can concur up until actual use as I have never found a single hydrogen canister BUT plenty of CVD machines

Hydrogen Canisters can be found rarely in lab storage rooms, IIRC.

Yeah, myself I’ve had zero luck with hydrogen. Already looted 3 labs, still have 1 I have to check out soon.

I get that hydrogen is supposed to be rare, but this is ridiculous. At least, there should be some hydrogen near the machine itself.

I think we just need a recipe for hydrogen. It’s one of the more available and easy to purify gases.

The Hydrogen used in Hydrogen Canisters is explicitly stated to be _solid_. The amount of pressure needed to get to that point is far, far beyond something that can be obtained through any machinery a survivor could conceivably make.

Huh? Never noticed that.
But, afaik, you just need extremely low temperatures to make it solidify.
Normally that would be an issue, but we have cold labs. So maybe add a machine to cold labs that can solidify hydrogen gas?

I read a commit where Kevin stated hydrogen will never be craftable, because of those reasons.

Pretty sure he might change his mind if he is provide with a proof that extremely low temperatures alone are sufficient.

I still don’t think it’s possible. It’s not just solid hydrogen, it’s super-compressed solid hydrogen, or so Kevin said.

But then again, how would you get close to absolute zero temperature in the game anyway? Cold labs are nowhere that cold.

And then you have to compress it. Or you know, first compress it, then solidify it.

Or you know, it might be _both at once_.

Cold labs are cold because they have inter-dimensional “links” to some VERY cold places. I can see a machined installed ON TOP of such link being able to achieve the necessary temperature.

The actual deciding factor here is game-balance impact, not “how plausible it is to DIY in modern garage”. Because, you know, garages don’t usually have inter-dimensional functionally (not overtly anyway).

Anyway, I think a reasonable middle ground here is for CVD machines to simply spawn with a charge or two of that magical hydrogen near them.

I suppose it makes more sense that you could use it on just about anything, without needing a specific recipie. Will have to go back to that lab and try it with my arming sword. Actually managed to find a hydrogen tank at some point, in my 2nd lab. Pretty lucky find though, given that the 6 or so since then haven’t yielded a second.

Then you’ll get people complaining that the Hydrogen Cells explode every single time they get to the Finale.

Yeah, your best chance for finding Hydrogen Cells is to just keep exploring labs and looking on the bodies of dead soldiers, you’ll find them eventually. When one considers they’re meant as fuel for a weapon that never made it passed “Proof of Concept” stage, it makes sense they’re so rare.

> Cold labs are cold because they have inter-dimensional “links” to some VERY cold places. I can see a machined installed ON TOP of such link being able to achieve the necessary temperature.

So that is the reason for the existence of cold labs? Fine, let’s assume you can get the required temperature. You still need some high-end ( maybe even experimental ) level of technology to compress the hydrogen and a proper tank to store it.

> Anyway, I think a reasonable middle ground here is for CVD machines to simply spawn with a charge or two of that magical hydrogen near them.

I can’t possibly disagree with that.

Another idea for the issue of the hydrogen could possibly be to rebalance the spawns. I have no idea how much hydrogen spawns at once ( 50 units? 20 units? ) but what if we were to cut it in half, or even into quarters, and simply increase the spawn rate? In the end, you should get around the same amount of hydrogen, or maybe even less because of the increased spawn rate, but at least this would make diamondizing stuff much less of a pray- to-RNGesus-type of deal.

You would still need to explore a couple labs to get enough hydrogen and actually find the CVD machine, so it would still be more of an endgame thing.
