CDDA Game Launcher (Automatic updates and more!)

I don’t understand why, but my launcher is incredibly finicky. If I don’t manually delete the previous_version directory, update fails, complaining about a previously existing folder.
If I’m not paying full attention and start the update with one of the folders open in exploere, the update fails, complaining about a folder not being empty (I actually understand this one, windows is a terrible operating system and likes to have exclusive access to things.)

The third and most annoying error happens while backing up the previous version, WinError 145, folder isn’t empty. It happens about half the time during updates, no matter how well I prepare before hand.

Does anyone have any ideas about why this is occuring? I’ve got the most recent version, 1.3.15. It’s really getting annoying, updating used to be such a smooth streamlined thing. And it still is, except for when it isn’t.

To get around these issues, I just delete my save game (which I always have a backup of on a flash-drive anyway), and then restore the save from the recycle bin, once the update is done…

I have it set to not move saves. When it fails it’s always something in the mods folder, or the mods folder itself that’s not empty. When I don’t delete previous_version it fails everytime, saying previous_version isn’t empty. Deleting that gives me about…70%? shot at it making it through the rest of the process. If it makes it through backing up previous version, I’m usually good to go, it rarely fails after that hurdle. I’m running the game off a flash drive if that makes a difference, it didn’t used to.

Okay, not sure what’s going on then, as I’ve never tried running the game off of a flash-drive.

Running off the drive saves me a lot of time copying files, I’m on different PC’s all the time. I bet it’s a Windows 10 thing. My flash drive is outdated lol

Haha yeah, I’ve ran into a couple of bizarre things with different indie games that I play through Steam, since I started using Windows 10 a few months back…

I have to unplug and plug back in my wireless adapter at random times throughout the day. Sometimes for extended period of time it refuses to work, unless I unplug it, reset the pc, and plug it back in. Occasionally, all the usb ports aren’t. Until they are. Windows 10, everyone, welcome to the future.

That’s just my home system though. I have this problem everywhere, though I’m pretty sure everywhere IS using windows 10…I guess I need a new usb drive to test, fucking Microsoft wins again. I just did an update, had the same problem. It’s becoming less nervewracking to move the partially moved copy out of previous_version back to main directory, after all, the launcher has never actually deleted anything. It can’t, it seems. It just moves stuff around and throws an error half the time it tries to delete a directory…There’s a clue there, but I’m too uneducated to figure it out.

Oh, trust me, the launcher CAN and DOES delete stuff, which is why I keep a backup of certain things close by!

Stuff like the options file, a copy of any extra, non-launcher available mods that I am using, tilesets, character templates, and the aforementioned saved game files. The templates seem to be a favourite of the launcher to randomly disappear…

So helpful for safe and easy updates to cataclysm.

I wonder if there is any chance for an android version in the future?
There’s an issue with the android builds right now (control bug) but later on it would be a great supplement for when i’m away from the PC.

I’m getting the little Caution Exclamation Point to the right of the saves line on the laucher’s main page. It says I might want to check “do not move or copy save files” because mine is getting large. Is this a good idea or should I just keep it as is, unchecked? I do occasionally make backups by copying my entire CDDA folder to another location on my PC, but not sure if that makes a difference. Thanks for any help.

I’ve used that option since the beginning and haven’t lost a world yet. It just leaves the save folder in place when updating. You already know you won’t get an automatic backup that way, so you’re all set.
